an idea …is it possible to save water?
« on: December 11, 2011, 08:54:37 pm »
To save water, is it possible to save the waste from the ro into a water butt, perhaps two linked together, and pump the water with a powerful pump back into the ro which in effect recycles the water? This may be better if one is on a water meter?
What pump would be powerful enough to get the pressure up?
Any ideas cheers

you could mix some of the waste back into your tap water but the TDS will be high and ultimately damage the RO membranes

Rain does not come out of the sky at 000tds. Rain is actually made by water in clouds at 000tds 'sticking' to particals of dust in the sky! When these become too heavy to stay up, they will fall to the ground. I watched a documentary during the last Olympics which explained how the Chinese were planning to stop any rain from falling during the games by dropping dust bombs into clouds before they reached cities in which games were being held.

And......sorry to bore you all. This is something that governments no about too, and the same documentary informed that a document has been signed by most nations to say they will not use such methods during any type of war.

I found it quite interesting.

Yawn.

at what point would the TDS be too high?
Here on the IOW the TDS is about 350 before Ro,where up north i believe it
to be alot lower. So does that mean that the lower TDS before Ro could repump the
water through ?

My waste come out at about 400, I wouldn't want to put this through again as my tap water is a lot lower, meanimg more RO life. If you could put rainwater through at anything between 5 and 35 depending on how it was harvested, I would expect the waste to still be a lot lower than tap water. Only when the waste became a higher tds than your tap would this become pointless.

Would be interesting to know if anyone does this tho.

Well done! I used numbers as examples. I'm sure they will be harvested off of my own moss riddled roof at a lot higher than 35. Check out posts by wizkid in another topic. Apparently we can't go by tds only, as we really don't know what the tds is made up of. Ie.

Tapwater at 70!? Nice one. Sounds like you have it setup nicely. Personally I'm lazy. I pay rates and all that sounds too much work.

cheers for your replies…. I have measured the tds on waste water and its about the same as the gloucester hard water - 320 ish which is why I am stuck with RO. About to move back to Malvern which is all metered water… just thought I might be able to recycle

hiya chez. yes I had same idea previously, but if you measure the waste it is far higher than your input is to start with, as got higher concentration of dirt in.

as a thought tho, if you can be bothered to go to hassle, and depending if you have tank in house roof, it could be pumped into storage tank and possibly reused for tap/flushing toilet/bath water if you don't want to waste it?!

that or have lovely green grass Ilib the summer!

Are there not some "wasteless" RO units you can buy? This is a serious question actually because I am looking at having to go on a meter eventually.

Hey A S windows…… might be a good idea to pump it up to a tank in the loft. I will investigate when I move in. Project for the spring me thinks and use it for watering the garden !!!
