Website picture and no licence!
« on: October 16, 2011, 06:37:06 pm »
I put my website together myself and purchaced pictures from Fotolia.
However I overlooked one of the pictures I used when I set it up. This was a picture downloaded from the web and placed on my site. I intended to replace with a Fotolia picture, but didn't really want the page.

The page has not been linked to my main site for years and I should have deleted the page altogether. I forgot.

I am now in reciept of a bill from Getty Images for unlicened use of a picture thay have the rights to.

That bill is for £968.00  :o

Lesson. Unless you know where the pictures come from dont use them as they may find and fine you.

if you need to talk about this give me a call one evening, do not pay this bill till you have spoke to me dude, I could save you this £900 odd.

Ori, it does not matter what the pic is, they catch you on pixels and mapping an image, basically as an example if you have a square centimeter of an image and add it to your own, if it came from one of there images you are in breach of there licensing even if you don't know about it (meaning if a designer did this cheap you are liable), if you host it your the one that pays, and they do take to court, they do this to protect their clients that add their images to getty's library for sale.

More and more of this will happen, they have programs running 24/7 processing every image in search results, so the clever people that steal images online taking from Google without paying etc and then put them on their sites will need to worry as they will be on a getty list.

So could you get around it by renaming the file and altering the dpi in image manipulation software and/or compressing it a bit?

if it mirrors what they have Paul, then I would guess no mate, I edited some clouds and made smaller from an image in a template and they caught me.

Sorry its happened to you.

The moral is, pay for your images from an image supplier. It costs at the most a couple of quid for a licenced image. Keep your receipts for the ones you have bought, in case the supplier (or their supplier) nicked them in the first place.

We use istockphoto and have spent about £30 or so. Much cheaper than getting one of these demands in your email; they WILL get you, no matter what you do to their pictures. They smell the money, they have the technology.
