Builder clean "nightmare"
« on: October 12, 2011, 08:30:45 pm »
What a nightmare they are you guys said stay clear of them.
Why ohh why didn't I listen....
Well it was an Internet enquiry so may lead to the other 300 houses.
It was the first day and I only cleaned 2 three beds.

What is the best way to clean them fast or is it just practice?

Cheers all

that is why you charge lots and lots of money, so if you get them it is worth doing only 2 or 3 a day

I have just given up builders cleans. In the 3 years of wc ing I have never got the timing right/charge. It has always taken much longer than I have allowed for.
More importantly me and my apprentice work so hard on them that it affects the next days cleaning. We are knackered from it and don't really earn any more money.
So why do them when you can work so much easier for the same money??

Its only taken me 3 years!!

Learn from my lesson....

2 3 beds isn't bad for one day. I've done some that were so bad they took a day and a half each!

If you're not getting the right money mate then drop them now and don;t go back to lose anymore money. How many are you expected to do in total?

I do them for a cleaning company but have told them in no uncertain terms that I am stopping doing them. They thought I was mad giving up the money they paid me for them until I told them how much I could make in a day on domestics. They have asked me now to teach a couple of their guys to do them so they can pay them minimum wage to do it. I just do sparkle cleans now for them which is ideal. They are getting a van together now though to do their own sparkle cleans but I don't mind that at all.

The cost of builders cleans in comparrison to what other costs are involved is small time and loose change to the contractor. That's why when I've done them I usually quote around about £75 a house. If they say no then I've saved myself a lot of hard work, if they say yes, then I'll earn some good money.

What I'd do is go back to the contractor who asked you in the first place and simply say you seriously under quoted for the job. If he agrees to a new price, well and good but if he doesn't, then just walk away.

It is always worth remembering that sorting out the windows is usually a last minute thing so they may not have time to find anyone else.
Just chant..... Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. It's beats chanting Tory Tory or Labour Labour.

We knew we had a builders clean on a project in Preston. The 80000sq feet store went into shutdown (stopped trading to the public,) so that the rip out of the interior could begin. It would reopen one week later.

We have always been able to get in and do peripheral works before the stores go into shutdown but on this one we couldn't.

I had 6 days, with a team of three to turn it around, all walls, cladding, all glass, kerb edges, fuel station (not in sq footage) canopy, floor and islands, car wash, service yard, all perimeter paths, all Tarmac around the store and the service yard.

These are monstrous jobs and you do an area and it is dirty again the next day.

We absolutely nailed it and could have easily done it in five days. Stop moaning and get on with it, I am on my 30th store this year ;D ;D ;D

I've never done many builders cleans but, apart from one, have always regretted taking them on.  Not only do you have to graft hard for similar money to normal work, it also disrupts the scheduling of the regular customers.  Maybe I should have priced them higher but really, I dislike doing them and I didn't become self-employed to do something that I don't like doing.

I don't see the problem with builders cleans. The only way you can go wrong is by bad pricing. I cleaned 16 windows the other day for £250. They took all day, but it's a days work for days money. Don't be bullied into quoting cheaper if you're confident of the time it will take. You can always discount the job at the end if you get through it quicker.

I am unlikely to go anywhere near a builders clean again. Over the years done many, and regretted getting involved with all of them, with the exception of the last one that I did last year.

Absolute minimum price is now £100 with payment on production of an invoice, and even then it would have to be on the cast Iron understanding that scratches are not my problem.

Newbies beware of builders cleans, they can mess with your head and your pocket.

if it is dirty it is fair game
