Cleaning travetine flooring
« on: August 26, 2011, 09:10:03 am »
Hi all,

For all you stone floor experts, we have been asked to clean and seal a travetine floor and wondered what the best way is to go about this.

We have cleaned a few in holiday properties before that have been just lightly soiled and know you mustnt use anything acid etc on them, but think this may need something stronger,

I went to see it yesterday, its only been down since May, but as it is in a  fairly large kitchen its got really grubby and the grout is quite dark in places.

They had it sealed with HG inpregnater and it hasnt protected it at all.

Just said id get back to them with best method and sealant,  think they have spent a lot on the flooring so want the best for it.

Regards
Steve

Good detergents - Stonecare - or Tiledoctor

Use a rotary and a green pad (carefull red pad can leave a pink haze on the stone).  Rinse with a spinner - SX12 / SX7 or Gekko To give a shiny finish use twister pads or simmilar.

Avoid acids and watch out for grout haze... best to use twister pads to get rid of it.

If a extra high shine is required you would need to polish and possibly finish off with polishing powder.

Carefull with too high presure on your spinner tool as filled travertine can be blown out.

Hello steve

what type of finish is on the floor
is it tumbled, honed and filled, polished. or honed and unfilled

each finish requires a different process

Hi Steve

If you just want to just clean and seal this, use stone cleaning product
(stone soap) deep stone cleaner with a white pad  you can even up the finish
with a twister pad i would go with 800 grit then 1500 grit

If you are fimiliar with honeing powders and there use, then finish it with this, it
will give you a more even finish on the floor.

Kevin sells all above products   077 705 98855

sealer i personaly use Faber sealer range ---   PRO TW LUX LOW

Ok,  thanks for the advice, think it will be fairly straight forward as the floor is nearly new, just got dirty quickly,

A good clean and a proper seal will do the trick i think,  the customer sealed it himself and i think he skimped on the product a bit as its a fairly large room and its not given much protection.

Thanks again, i will source the products i need

cheers

good sealer is expensive, make sure you charge accordingly, £15 to £25 a sq meter to clean and seal should be about right.
