would you accept it?
« on: July 16, 2011, 01:03:59 pm »
Got a customer who pays cash through my door.
It started out as a £14 job. No problems but when they pay they would put it through my front door in an envelope with a ten note plus loads of change.
It always annoys me but I let it go. last month I got A £5 and loads of change.saw him as he posted it so I made a comment and he just laughed.
This month the price went up to £16 due to a small extension adding a few windows.
Today I get a plastic bag full of coppers on my doorstep.

I know there is a maximum I can accept by law so going to shove it back through his door with a letter saying I am not a piggy bank so please pay in a resonable way.

If you want to get legal with him, here are the guidelines.  http://www.royalmint.com/corporate/policies/legal_tender_guidelines.aspx

However, I'd suggest not getting legal with him.  Why not just ask him nicely and point out that the bank will charge you for paying it in.

Ah, the standard CUI response.  Never discuss, just dump.

I wouldn't mind the silver but paying with coppers really is taking the mick!
I'd have a word rather than dumping though - tell him that the bank are refusing to accept it so you'll have to charge him more for paying it into one of those change things at the supermarket!!! That'll sort him.  ;D

Money is money. My loose change normally goes in the self serve machine at the supermarket

I can under stand how you feel, but think about it, they might have a tight budget and they can only pay this way buy using change from their own transactions. I have a famaliy that paid cash in notes and now he's lost his job and she is about to have a baby and they have paid me like this the passed two cleans. I'm not going to drop them because they bothered to explain why. i just use this money as float money, like if I'm out and want a cup of tea paper can of coke that sort of thing.

Same here - actually quite useful.
Failing that my local post office is happy to give me bags and pay me out some £1 coins.
Irritating but at least he's paying up.

Various responses as expected. Thanks
I will have a word. If not in I will write to them.

The option of paying in at a supermarket cash machine is a definite no go. Why should I have to make a special trip to cash in his piggy bank and then get charged 8% for doing so. If my maths is correct thats £1.72. I will be making a loss on the job.

I doubt they are paying me in change due to hard times. Obviously I cant be sure but the 3 month old Audi on the drive is a give away.

Good point, the way some custies are, I'm happy if they pay on time and in full. If they always pay this way, then if it causes problems or extra cost to book it into the bank, then stick a charge on top of the price.

I've got one custy who has the bailiffs calling soon to collect a debt of about 40 quid. Including costs, she will end up paying more than double that to the bailiff.

So as long as it's not a problem paying into your bank, just accept it mate.

Why not put all your change into a big jar. I do this with anything below 50p its amazing over a few months the amount you build up.
If you cant be bothered to count it out take it to a automatic machine and change it for notes!!!! minus a handling charge!

if you've got the hump about it dump them. ::)

as for the three month old audi that don't mean anything the car could be on finance and they could be having a cash flow problem.

Its still money aint it? Just bag it up and bank it. And theyre good enough to drop it off for you? Wish some of my customers would drop money off at mine.

the big question should be - would the customers accept it?

so say for example you do a £10 house. they only have a £20 note - would they take £10 in coppers? i very much doubt it!

prefer cheque or notes, but cash is cash, it can still get spent
