I think you should count yourself lucky that the customer goes out of their way to pay you at your home address.

I'm sure you can manage the inconvienience after your recent/decent price increase.

Not posting this to have a 'pop' at you, it'ds just that I've encountered more than my share of difficult customers over the years. :)

Id take it every time everything smaller than a £1 coin gets saved comes in handy when i cash it in for  christmas. If just that 1 customer paid you the full £14 each month in small change. Its still £164 a year if you dont do it someone else will.Never a good idea to leave holes in your round.

i have 1 customer who works in a village shop who for some  unknown reason thinks that i love getting paid in small change . the daft thing about it is that i always smile broadly as its handed over  and i say "thaNK YOU " as if its a REAL TREAT  to be given it.

Various responses as expected. Thanks
I will have a word. If not in I will write to them.

The option of paying in at a supermarket cash machine is a definite no go. Why should I have to make a special trip to cash in his piggy bank and then get charged 8% for doing so. If my maths is correct thats £1.72. I will be making a loss on the job.

I doubt they are paying me in change due to hard times. Obviously I cant be sure but the 3 month old Audi on the drive is a give away.

I dont mean that machine, I mean the self serve machine when paying for food

I do too. I'm not paying some lousy machine 8% of my money.
Works great in the self serve / scan till.

I can't see the problem I just bag it up and pay it into the bank with the other cash, it does get on my nerves a bit but money is money and at least they are paying.

although I did get my own back once when someone who pays me from the copper/silver jar had a twenty note and I happened to have all the change from the last clean bagged up and counted in my van, I said I was short on change but if I had some in the van and I gave it all back ;D

Got a customer who pays cash through my door.
It started out as a £14 job. No problems but when they pay they would put it through my front door in an envelope with a ten note plus loads of change.
It always annoys me but I let it go. last month I got A £5 and loads of change.saw him as he posted it so I made a comment and he just laughed.
This month the price went up to £16 due to a small extension adding a few windows.
Today I get a plastic bag full of coppers on my doorstep.

I know there is a maximum I can accept by law so going to shove it back through his door with a letter saying I am not a piggy bank so please pay in a resonable way.

Just have a word with them- tell them you`re getting stuck with the change.
It does sound as though they`re saving it for you; they may have a small gripe about something.
I`d just ask not to be continually paid in change, for the above reason and you may get to the bottom of it.

It seems the general opinion here is that I should just put up and shut up. Thats fair enough I guess. Its just the inconvenience that I find irratating.

Yes I could take the money to the shops to spend, yes I could give it to the kids, yes I could save it all up in a jar and spend it at christmas. But I dont want too.
To do any of those things means I have to take money out of my pocket to put into the business account to cover the customers payment or my books wont balance. That then means I am £16 short in my personal spending money for the week so It may mean a trip to the cash point to cover it.
All the way down the line this one customer costs more of my time which in turn is costing money
So I will stand by my initial plan and ask the customer to pay me in a more acceptable way or find another cleaner.

it shouldn't be a problem with your books if it's a CASH PAYMENT ;)  ;)

I think you`ve got it right, Steve. Do it politely and they can`t have any argument.
If they`re not prepared to pay the new way and you`re not prepared to accept the old way, it`s time to part company.

In NatWest and some other banks there is a machine that you can pay cheques, cash and coins into with no charge. You can pay in up to 50 cheques and 50 notes at a time, and 1000 coins.

Thats what I do.

Also you do get a little print out of the cheques so you have a record of whose paid.
