frankybadboy, just curious, why did you go for an american suffix for your domain name? .com?

the 'com' stands for companies, 'org' stands for organizations. If you can use a .com, that's generally seen as better.

With country specific domains (such as .co.uk), it simply helps the search engines identify you as targeting Brits, but you'll still show up in American search results.

Unless you have a specific reason to be a .co.uk such as targeting exclusively British audience (e.g. local business consulting) I'd suggest getting the .com (and redirecting the .co.uk to protect it from competitors).

Also,.. those customers who aren't too web savvy will often remember .com easier than any other, so will find your site easier.  ;)

Some people get both .com & .co.uk domains pointing to the same site, just to make sure.

Jake, thanks for the explanation m8

My question still stands though. Why would a *local* UK cleaning company want to show up in the USA anyway?

Since SEO (Search engine optimisation) is the single most important factor in a website working (bringing in new business) it doesn’t make any sense to handicap yourself with a .com domain name as the *primary* domain name (your argument for a .com is a good idea and will stop the name from being brought by a competitor, but when targeting the UK it should be only used as a domain *Alias*)

Bottom line, if you want to do well in the USA you should be using .com. If you want to do well in the UK, use co.uk. want to do well in both? Use both.

Exactly, and there is a case to be made for having both, but my point is, (and i should have been more clear) a UK company shouldnt just have a .com. Speaking from a SEO point of view, it is badly advised!

Hi Jake,

The key questions is though *what were you searching for*, if you were searching for your company name you will come up tops because not many other sites will be fighting for that search term.

The critical question is did/do you come up for search terms your target clients are going to search for "window cleaning service in TARGET AREA". As example. If you are not on page one/two for business critical search terms you may as well be on page 50.

That’s where the new business is m8, and where you want to be coming up tops to get a chance at that new business. You could have the worst website in the world and still make a killing if you come in on page one, whereas the guy with the best looking website in the world doesnt get a peep because he is stuck on page 3 (i have seen it many times). People are lazy and they will always go with the first page results, second at a push!

The sites that don’t get good *organic* results are then forced to *work for their website" and pay to advertise it, this is backwards, you shouldn’t have to pay to advertise your website to advertise yourself.

Best approach would be to put yourself in a potential customers boots, what are they most likely going to search for when going on line? If I wanted a WINDOW cleaner I would type in "window cleaners in Bedford" and go with someone on the first page. Wouldnt you?

3 of the top 7 for window cleaners London are .com domains.
You can set your search location in Google tools, so .com or .co.uk doesn't make a difference.

AJ, sorry bud but you are referring to Google "map" results. Google map results are not indexed based on the website, they are indexed based on the locations of the business, they have NOTHING todo with SEO. I am talking about whats called *organic results* which are indexed based on your website and its SEO (or lack of)

A quick search for “window cleaners London” proves my point actually since the ONLY site with a .COM is http://www.thelondonwindowcleaner.com/ but this site also has the domain ALIAS http://www.thelondonwindowcleaner.co.uk and IS the only reason it is placed so well.

Look guys, I worked for a search engine optimisation company for serveral years and studied web application development (client side, server side and database design) for three years at university so I *assure* you I know what I am talking about. The first advise any SEO consultant will give you is that you need a .co.uk if not as the primary then the ALIAS because a .com DOES affect your SEO results here in the UK, esp when targeting a UK audience.

Buy a second domain name for £5.98 every two years, it’s not going to get you to page one alone but it will help a hell of a lot more than just having a .com

Its not like im trying to convince you I am Jesus :) I am just giving you a very basic tip, not to help me, to help yous to help yourselves...

I also get 3 .com domains on the first page in a google search (not maps) for window cleaners london.

www.ncpm247.com/

www.gazeaglaze.com/

www.regencycleaning.com/

Interestingly, only www.regencycleaning.com/ has a .co.uk alternative,.. but its lowest on the list and the other domain is a different company,...
