HAS MY MEMBRANE GONE AGAIN???
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:38:35 am »
got a facelift static system not long changed the membrane prob within last 4-5 months maybe less, havent really used it over xmas but its filled 1000litre ibc most times its been on over a nite or so changed the resin yesterday and overnight it now trickling prob done 200 litres in 10 hours, took it all apart and faffed around with the waste pipe valve.

anything else i could try before i replace with the ro membrane in my van which is new also???

wouldnt mind its gone thru all the proper cold weather but since its gone bit cooler at nite again maybe just below 0 degrees it seems to have blown

could this be too much resin???

any help would be appreciated

cheers guys

Test the TDS immediately after the RO.  If that has gone up loads then the membrane is probably shot.  When a membrane is shot, the lower production is usually accompanied by a more quickly rising TDS.
Other possibilities include (but not limited to):- Getting resin in the pipework causing a partial blockage (possibly the riser tube in the resin vessel if you have one like that), an airlock, a dodgy fitting (particularly if using hozelock style), a kink in the pipework.
Test that TDS first though as if that is climbing fast it will save you checking the rest of it.  Obviously a lot of the above depends on what type of pipes/fittings/resin vessel you have.
Let it run for a while before doing the test as it can take a while for the RO to settle down.

do you have a pressure gauge on your system? if so whats the pressure? it sounds to me like the membrane is fouling, rather than the  frost, would get to the bottom of the problem before you change it again.

Before you check the tds directly after the R/O, flush the membrane for several minutes.
For instance; if you have had the waste valve closed too far the membrane can get clogged up or fouled
do you have a pressure gauge on your system? if so whats the pressure? it sounds to me like the membrane is fouling, rather than the  frost, would get to the bottom of the problem before you change it again.

That could be what X-line is on about.

You haven't said when you last changed your pre filters?

In the past I've changed my pre filters only to find that the new...I think it was the particulate filter...was faulty and caused a huge drop in  water pressure at the membrane.
Of course, if you haven't changed the pre filters then that also could be the problem!
To eliminate the filters so that you can check JUST the membrane (especially if your pressure gauges are faulty (or non existent)  remove the filters and re-fit the filter casings.
You can also remove and empty the resin casing too.

If you are worried about the likes of chlorine damaging your membrane, you can always leave that filter in place, as it is unlikely to be the fault of that filter.

Other than that, All as Paul has already said.

My guess is the prefilter, or air lock.
or you have a drop in pressure from the mains
