What would you do......
« on: November 28, 2010, 05:23:38 pm »
When i was cleaning for a custie a couple of weeks ago (commercial) i had a guy come and tells me he  is the manager of a new shop that is opening and needs a windie for his new shop. Now,it's not a new company in the area but just one that has moved a couple of hundred yards down the road.

So as it was just around the corner i told him that when i had finished the job i was doing i will pop round and give a quote. Anway, after i had quoted he rang me up later and asked if i could do the 1st clean asap, and then carry and clean them twice weekly.

So 1st clean out of the way,the week after i was cleaning the windows as asked when one of the lasses who works there comes and tells me that the window cleaner who used to clean the old shop is now cleaning the windows on the new store.

So i pop in and see the manager, who tells me that as the old windie couldn't be bothered to see if they wanted him to clean the new store and just assumed that they would then he has s**t out.

This is where it gets akward,as i know him quite well, i let him know that i'm not treading on his toes or poaching his work but the manager had asked me for a quote and told me to go ahead once he had had it. The windie had cleaned the old store for 12 years.

How would you feels in this situation,i feel bad for the old windie, nobody want's to loose work, but as i priced it quite nicely i don't realy want to lose it either. Would you assume that if you was working for a company and they was moving that you would be going to the new store too?

I just feel a bit funny at the mo when i am cleaning it.

From his point of view he had cleaned for this company for 12 years so should realy be cleaning the new store.
From my point of view the guy came to me and said he needed a windie and a quote.

Having not cleaned the old store i'm not sure if it is a new manager or not. Don't realy know the staff yet! Do feel bad for him,but like most of you guys would say i gotta look after number 1! As i see him most days i just get the feeling it's gonna be a little uneasy.

Customers choose who they want to clean their windows. If the manager asked you, agreed with your price and told you to go ahead, then the job is yours until you are informed by the manager to the contrary.

Don't feel too badly about the other guy. He should not have assumed that the job remained his just because of the shop's relocation.

If the other guy approaches you, just be straight with him and tell him that you were asked to do the job. If he wants to take it up with the manager, it is up to him.

when someone moves house they dont always got the same windie to do the next house, they just get someone local.things change and ultimately the customer chooses.I had this with a house i was asked to clean, pull up outside and another windie was cleaning a house two doors down, said it was his patch,I just laugh at him and said if you want to clean it go ahead we spoke to the customer about it and he said I ask you to clean them, neither of us cleaned it.I learnt that it is the customer who decides not me or any other w/c.

A tricky situation if you know the guy.
If you are feeling bad about it, after a few cleans maybe offer him money as if you were buying the job from him.  Of course you have no obligation to do so.  I know most of the guys around my way who do the shops.  I just don't canvass them because I value them more than their work (for which I sometimes provide holiday cover).  Different if approached though.

Same here,i will always stop and talk to all the windies i come across, and would certainly not poach work,or undercut to get work. Turns out i am nearly double his old price on the new store!
The guy's i know would help out if i needed it,and vice-versa. Hope he see's it the way i and most on here does.
Lesson learned is not to assume i would be kept on if a job relocates, but to be making my services available to the manager for his/her new store straightaway!  ;)
