So i might be in the market for a vacum cleaner and quite fancy a kirby as they look retro and cool

My question is, is a new kirby (with reg maintance etc) as good/powerful as a SEBO BS36?? I've used these once or twice  : and they are powerful but i prefer the looks of a Kirby.

Used a Kirby at a customers house and seemed to have done a good job!

I like the bs36 but the dart has it for me. Wife has a verwork another good machine

The Kirby will do a very good job, but new price is ridiculous - buy 2nd hand but make sure you get the drive assist mechanism. This makes a machine that is hard to push as light as a feather.

Downside of Kirby is that to put a hose on to do edges takes a few minutes every time. Not good, thats why a Sebo is better.

Ive got a Kirby G4. 14 year old when I bought it. Its not 18 year old and is still a phenomenal vacuum cleaner! Go for at least a G6 now that has been fully serviced and includes all tools. Only buy the gnarled belts as the smooth ones are rubbish.

I am a big believer in vacuuming before HWE and because of the way the Kirby works it does get more dirt out than any other vacuum cleaner.

When I was in my early 20s I went to the Kirby training course (boo hiss). I spent a week learning about these machines and believe me they blow everything else ive ever seen away!

Ive never used a Sebo so cannot comment but they are supposed to be really good as well.

If you get a kirby make sure to watch the Kirby videos someone has posted on Youtube to learn how to use the machine properly and pick up some half decent tips.

Wife has a verwork another good machine

Customer gave me one of these Verwork's about a year ago, they were moving out and didn't fancy taking it with them.
Sat in my store since then until recently when I decided to keep upstairs in the house for the kids to vacuum there own rooms. Used a couple of times myself recently and have to say its a very good sucker 
Better then the wifes Dyson, light weight, good suction and if it wasn't for the short lead and lack of pull out suction tube would use for carpet cleaning

Funnily enough there is something in the papers about 'Hoovers' today. Evidently the EU want to put a minimum or max wattage on them to cut down on the power they use.

They compared Hoovers, 60's up to today and the Hoover from the 60's was better at picking up crisps, dust etc etc.

The guy from the Vacuum musuem said in his opinion the best vac was the Kirby, knocked everything else into a cocked hat. Though its not technically a vac, its something else, he didnt elaborate on why. Perhaps someone else can tell us the difference.

I am about to buy a Sebo, the George, though reliable and hard working has had its day he will only be coming out for eot and pub work.

The old Hoovers had a heavy duty beater bar which made a difference. I believe there's an import from the US built along similar lines and highly regarded think it's called a Royale.

a normal vac pulls dirt in to the bag but a Kirby pushes the dirt in to the bag. because the motor on the Kirby is before the bag it does not lose suction as the bag fills up.

but since the Kirby changed the vacuum  fan from metal to plastic there has be a problem with picking up metal objects that damaged the fan.

They do need replacing when they get older though and make some strange whining noises at times. They also need an extortionate amount of bags and the occasional belt does them good and keeps them working longer. Some might find the weight an issue

Actually, if treated right, they keep going for years, the whining noises should stop when serviced properly and if the operator is fit and strong then weight shouldn't become an issue. Once you've had a Kirby, nothing else compares!! :-P

I dont find weight an issue with the Kirby, cant be that much difference to a Sebo BS36.

What is an issue is the "weight" when vacuuming. The suction is so great it makes push-pull difficult UNLESS you have a machine with the powerdrive pedal and then the machine becomes incredible simple to push-pull.

My machine is about 12 years old now, bough 2nd hand for £110, and it has the power drive pedal and if it had a hose that attached easily then the Sebo wouldnt get a 2nd look I dont think.

Attaching a hose to the Royal is even more long winded from what I hear - need a screwdriver!!!
