im dragging myself into the 21st century but ive a few questions for you guys that do use online banking!
ive set up online banking with my account.im waiting for a card reader for additional security to be able to pay money into my account.
so can you just give custies your bank number and sort code and they then go online and can pay money into your account?
how does the card reader work?im also getting a another card and PIN.IM CONFUSED HOW THIS ALL WORKS!!

do you need a website to get custies to pay online?
and finally what percentage of your custies do pay online?
confused guys and would appreciate some help!
thanks in advance lads

The way I do it:
1) Avoid Santander as they won't supply you with the reference numbers that you give your customer. Co-op seem OK and probably most others.
2) I supply them with my sort code and account number.
3) I supply them with a unique reference number <housenumber or abbreviation of housename><postcode>. No website necessary.
4) They will probably have to go through extra security with their bank when setting it up for the first payment. This can be a card reader or it may take the form of the bank texting a security code (in the case of Santander) to them to use when setting up the first payment. This is not about you needing their card details. It is purely an extra verification by their bank that ensures that it is the account holder who is authorising the payment. Once the payment has been used once, further verification is unnecessary. It is done this way because a popular online scam is to hack into someone's account (often via a virus on their PC) and set up a bill payment to the hacker's bank account. When extra verification is used, this becomes a lot less likely. In Santander's case it could be done if someone's mobile or SIM card were stolen AND the thief also hacked into the account. Technically possible but it becomes very unlikely if both things must occur.
I've never used a card reader myself. I do have a Co-op account and they have just sent me a security "token" (looks like a mini calculator). So I will need to figure it out soon.
The advantage of doing transfers rather than using paypal etc is that you usually incur no charges.
