« on: September 05, 2010, 09:12:37 am »
im dragging myself into the 21st century but ive a few questions for you guys that do use online banking!

ive set up online banking with my account.im waiting for a card reader for additional security to be able to pay money into my account.

so can you just give custies your bank number and sort code and they then go online and can pay money into your account?

how does the card reader work?im also getting a another card and PIN.IM CONFUSED HOW THIS ALL WORKS!! ??? ??? ???

do you need a website to get custies to pay online?

and finally what percentage of your custies do pay online?

confused guys and would appreciate some help!

thanks in advance lads

Hi Daz

bank transfer is the cheapest way for them to pay you, 2 ways bill pay or for them to set up a standing order.

when you say card reader is that for chip and pin or to take payments over the phone ?

payments can be made from your website you can use things like paypal to take payments from it and is free to set up.

if it is a chip and pin reader (handheld) yes customer puts in card and pin and it goes into clearing and then your bank account send123.net do this

BACS STANDING orders, bill pay ect dont cost me as I am electronic tariff with lloyds, I depends who you bank with and what tariff they give you.

One thing is you get the money without having to collect so the time saving is far outweighing the costs if you get any.

The way I do it:

1)  Avoid Santander as they won't supply you with the reference numbers that you give your customer.  Co-op seem OK and probably most others.

2)  I supply them with my sort code and account number.

3)  I supply them with a unique reference number <housenumber or abbreviation of housename><postcode>.  No website necessary.

4)  They will probably have to go through extra security with their bank when setting it up for the first payment.  This can be a card reader or it may take the form of the bank texting a security code (in the case of Santander) to them to use when setting up the first payment.  This is not about you needing their card details.  It is purely an extra verification by their bank that ensures that it is the account holder who is authorising the payment.  Once the payment has been used once, further verification is unnecessary.  It is done this way because a popular online scam is to hack into someone's account (often via a virus on their PC) and set up a bill payment to the hacker's bank account.  When extra verification is used, this becomes a lot less likely.  In Santander's case it could be done if someone's mobile or SIM card were stolen AND the thief also hacked into the account.  Technically possible but it becomes very unlikely if both things must occur.

I've never used a card reader myself.  I do have a Co-op account and they have just sent me a security "token" (looks like a mini calculator).  So I will need to figure it out soon.

The advantage of doing transfers rather than using paypal etc is that you usually incur no charges.

Have to add lloyds can and do charge for this service if using a business account on there standard tariff and I guess many others do also,
Personal accounts dont charge.

Like Ian I am with Lloyds with both my business bank accounts, the one down in Essex is on the electric tarrif meaning if you use your debit card or make and recieve online payments these are free, on my account up here in Leicester I am on the standard tarrif but I am still on my 18 months free banking, when that finishes I will be changing over to the electronic tarrif.
Only problem I encounter with this is that some customers take a week or so to pay, but it saves loads on fuel and time collecting.

so once your custies have your bank details(sort code and account number)and have paid more than once then you dont have to keep giving them your details every month?is that correct?

and make sure you get the custy to type in their first line of address in the reference section? ???

Yes it only needs to be set up once if doing the transfer direct from their account to yours.
As for the first line of the address, I opted for door numbers (or house name abbreviations) + postcodes.  I have had identical addresses in different towns a couple of times so postcodes are better IMO - so long as you keep a list of them  (I do this in my database as it's with all my other data)

Daz,  Online payments are real easy and saves time on collecting, as Matt said custy's sometimes take a week or so to pay, but get their email addy and you can send a reminder after 7 days.

once they have your details and pay these come up automatically for them when they go to pay again,
i think your card reader is for your security when you make payments online not your custy's
unless you have a business account and going to pay to rent a chip and pin machine.

If he has a card reader im guessing he's with Barclays. This card reader gives you a unique code to access your account online. Without it you will not be able to look at your account online.

Daz... Give the custys the name on the account, sort code & account number. They will pay it in each time you visit or some will set up a standing order for each month. I leave my bank details each time on a slip... It goes along the lines of this

Your windows have been cleaned

Payment via internet / telephone banking

Name....
Sort...
Acc...
Price...

Payment due within 7 days

Thankyou for your custom

I'd say about 60% of my customers pay this way, 10-20% on the door, 5% post a cheque and the rest i collect.

Some people like to use paypal too as an option.... There are fee's involved through paypal though.

As said above... Some people just forget to make payments on time. I send a text reminder after 10 days. On the whole, most online payers pay within the 7 days... I have a few who pay it online as soon as they see me cleaning.

Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

thanks guys.the card reader is for my own payments online/ paying a bill/ or a friend or relative.the card reader is NOT needed for accessing my account online just customer no./security no. and digits from my password.

thanks for the posts and info!ill be introducing this to some of my custies next week!about 60% of my custies pay in cash/cheque on the day, some SAE and the rest i collect.

i would like to keep collecting down to a minimum and eventually phase it out altogether but i doubt it at the moment! ::)

thanks again guys! ;D ;D
