Hi Berne,
I'm not quite getting the suspicion and somewhat ill-regarded comments from some on here. Maybe I am missing something here, but you appear to be simply asking for some basic advice on using low-end hot water extraction machines like the one you have bought.
My advice would be to do as you suggested; get on youtube. There are hundreds of videos that will show you some basic techniques. Just beware; there also some complete no-hopers who have made videos that show them doing all the mistakes! I've seen so-called pro's doing no dry strokes with a wand (overwets the carpet), lightening fast strokes that won't properly rinse or dry the carpet and people doing no prep work, like vacuuming and prespraying. In my experience the prep work is what will influence the quality of the final result, more than the expensiveness of the HWE machine or even it's effectiveness in the wash stage. Knowledge is HUGE part too though. There are some really experienced guys on here who could get a better result using a Rug Doctor that an amateur could get using a top of the range truckmount system. I've even seen a guy on youtube who uses spray bottles, terry towells and chems only, doing all carpets by hand and appears to get good results!
Good luck with your cleaning at home. Use the correct amount of solution, by a prespray and use it lightly, and get as much of the water off with dry strokes after you've done your wash.
Cheers,
Dave
