Hi all

I have been approached by a customer to offer a charity prize to a local good cause and I want to offer a window clean to the value of £35. I want to add in some clauses to cover myself. I have:

1. Must be in the geographic area I cover
2. I will explain what the extent of the cleaning I do to the winner before I clean. If the total cost is more than £35 the client can have fewer windows cleaned or elect to pay the extra cost
3. If the cost of the clean would usually be less than £35 the “unused portion of the win cannot be applied to another property
4. The date of the clean will be agreed with the winner but needs to remain flexible for operational reasons
5. Must be on a single property
6. No cash alternative can be offered

Anything else you guys can think of?

You tight arse , cant you see a good thing in the face , give a gutter and window clean for any domestic property .
You could be at said event handing out flyers , making people aware of the prize your offering , who knows what may come of it , forget the hit to your pocket , its all marketing for your comany .

That's daft. No sensible business operator would open themselves up to a 'how long is a piece of string' job. He is best saying something simple like not to exceed the value of £35.00 and Non transferable.

Rich - I don't really want any more business, i'm pretty full, so am not really interested in the marketing opportunity side of things, but as my name will be in the promo booklet for the event I have that angle covered, professionally, thanks. I certainly don't think a charity auction is the place to be canvassing... not really appropriate methinks.

Your lack of business experience points you out as naive BFG. Any company that makes open offers is setting themselves up for a fall. I have been in business before in a previous incarnation and I know from experience that you have to have some simple rules or you get crucified.

Anyway, what gives you the right to judge me? What gives you both the right to abuse me, calling me a tightarse? How long have you been in business and in that time just how much have your businesses given to charity?

So, seeing as we able to sling abuse about, BFG and Rich, go stick your poles up your arses. Or your squeegees if you are trad.

You must be real posh mate , and the quote about being in business before and getting crucifide , tell me , did you once get burned ?
That must be why your here now giving it charlie big spuds when im guessing that you cant even trad competantly , tell me , how long have you been in this line of work , when did you start ?
So in short , i reckon before you try telling people like me and BFG how to suck eggs you should stop and think for a while , you asked for advice , you got it , you didnt like it , tough , then dont ask in future , all i was merely saying was that one afternoon of your oh so busy time could be spent furthering yourself in the public eye , oh and one further point , charity events are hosted for one underlying purpose, to make people like all of us here and the big retail names for instance get a bit of notoriety , do you honestly think they pump large sums of money into these events for the cause , no , its for advertising for themselves , hey , they won you over with a promise of a mention in a big glossy mag , i bet you get one whole line of black and white print , smell the coffee boy and turn up with your leaflets , all the other will and you will be sat there like a lemon !

I don't know you and don't come on here to get insulted by people I don't know, so yes, it is abuse. Why couldn't you have made your point constructively?

Nope again, it's a little fundraiser for a local school in the village hall. There is no glossy magazine mate and i'm not going to attend the event - to much work on to spare time.

The real difference between us, you see, is that i'm doing it out of genuine charity, to do a good turn. I don't have a hidden marketing agenda as I don't need one. I've been trading just over a year (That's trading, not tradding by the way) as it happens and your right, i'm poor at tradding. But you know what - I don't give a rat's arse - i'm rammed with work, have an excellent name for myself, don't need to trad quickly so don't worry about it and was doing this little charity thing for the right reasons.

This post of yours still doesn't help, but never mind.

don't take offence sweety but squeezing your rather large head through the forum door wanting a big pat on the back for your £35 clean with lots of conditions just aint charity.

you say you have business experience from previous business ventures and yet you come on a window cleaning forum asking for charity legalities ?

me thinks your after the window cleaner of the month award for nig headedness 

you also asked me what I have ever done for charity ?  well lots actually but I don't need to come on a forum looking for a big pat on the back for it I just do it,      but seeing as you posed the question here goes.

Ive donated 10 lessons with a golf pro as a prize,   Ive donated a day for 4 people at Chester races including 3 course meal,      Ive donated a signed Arsenal shirt to another charity,   Ive taken part in 24 hour charity pool marathon,    and when any of my customers ever run a marathon I donate that months clean regardless of the price and I even get them to get the conny roof and fascia done to boost it.

thats called giving something back my learned friend,  but being a big successful business man you prob already knew that didn't you.


anyway why are you not asking Alan Suger for this advoce instead of us humble window cleaners ?

Gold - this was my point precisely. Thanks for understanding my point.

It's a small village raffle but I don't want to be shafted in the Longleat scenario you outlined so well. You've gotta have a few simple rules. In a previously life I was part of a team that ran a multi-million pound travel company and we used to make regular promotional offers - the things people used to try on was amazing!!!

Half the purpose of me posting on here was to get people on the forum thinking about it in case they were ever in the same situation - i've picked up lots of things I hadn't thought of just by reading posts on here.

I don't mind the prize being transferrable to be honest - if the winner already has a WC then I guess it would be nice if they can give it to a friend or relative. I don't, however, want to be traipsing miles out of my area 'cos someone sold a ticket to an Aunt 60 miles away. On reflection I also think it's fair that people with a small house or bungalow get a reasonable win, so they'll get 3 or 4 cleans.

I just think that giving a free voucher with loads of conditions is a bit rubbish if you are that concerned buy a prize and donate it as you said if you dont need the work then dont offer it

I also think think you need to put your toys back in your pram as I am sure there was a little light hearted banter in richs and some other comments  i hardly think calling someone a tight arse is abuse but then thats just me  :
