Title: WHAT I LIKE MOST ABOUT THE SL-X
Post by: Captain Scarlet on May 06, 2008, 08:33:57 pm
Well after using it for a bit now, my favourite thing about the SL-X is simply the way it looks, it looks really nice and professional. Dont get me wrong its good in every other way too, being super stiff and extremely extremely light. The carbon weave looks like some amazing hologram, especially in the sun. And the lettering along the pole looks really good too, Luke

I must agree that it does look very good, I don't care much about how it looks, but it does give a very pro look. Just like the SL2. :)

The clamps, I like the way they feel actually, much more than than any other clamp Ive used, I liked the xtel clamps but these are just as easy to use. With the threadlock they are great, Luke

I think it gives a real pro image and Ive noticed customers looking at it because of its fancy carbon pattern, Luke

Ill back you up there it is a nice pole in every way but i do find myself being caught out by the weave pattern in the pole (i should get a life) but this is a great pole in all ways and worth every penny imo.

A proper camparison will be coming soon, the sl-x is superb but for a true comparison & accurate stsements/comments i have to put it through it's paces a bit more to be fair all round. I can say though it's a real good'un. ;)

I'm going to paint the base section on my SL-X pole yellow so it's distinctive as one of my previous carbon poles was driven over by a woman driver who mounted the pavement where my pole was laying. She totally refused to cough up for the damage as she crushed my pole into tiny splinters.

A couple days later I noticed Karma had paid her a visit as her brand new, top of the range, Mercedes had been vandalised with three very long, deep, key/knife scratches all down one entire side when she'd parked up locally. I'd like to thank the person who vandalised her car and shake their hand.

What goes around, comes around.

About double the power of a Bentley, a bit hefty at full stretch but it's the right shape and the bristles are spot on - use it most of the time now, can even hear it scrubbing.  :)

Very impressive pole.
I thought it wouldn't be very suitable for ground floor windows, how wrong I was.
I fitted a Tucker brush on a swivel to it and can reach the lowest of windows now providing I'm not working in a confined space.
As an arthritic sufferer I thought I may have problems using the clamps. I find the clamps easy to get on with. Not as quick and easy as the excel clamps but a very close comparison.
Pole has a nice small diameter base section so it's not a strain on the fingers when used constantly. The sections are nice and rigid and the balance of the pole collapsed or fully extended is ideal. It has a good feel about it when used.
I'm impressed with this pole, I will buy another one as a spare and will highly recommend them to other window cleaners.

I may get one, and I agree they probably rate as the best pole but;

Why are they better to use than my 17' excel ? i've broke two this year but i'm only popping £70 , even with the scale up slx price they'd be more expensive for a clumsy speed merchant like me. My kit gets hammered.

I used the SLX alday today up and down and it was so much easier it`s unreal,i had it at full stretch this morning on window`s 30ft up without any problems.Discount trust  me when i say buy 1 you won`t regret it 1 bit,the job i did today i normally have to get the SL2 out but no need to with the new pole, most days all but 1 now on domestic the SLX reaches everything well worth the money.

Better than an electric reel for saving energy.  ;) Don't be such a tight wad - you need to invest in your business to reap the rewards. At your advanced age you should be considering all means possible of protecting your body. Then, save up for a couple more weeks and get the S2 as well, then you will have the perfect set up. Oh, you won't be breaking an SL-X either. When the customer sees you have the most advanded kit known to man, his jaw will drop and he'll just pass the notes over in amazement!
If i get the sun shining on the carbon weave i swear i can see Alex's face in it- like a hologram!

I can clean up to 38 ft with the SL-X if I stand on the crawling board on the roof rack of my van- can anyone beat that? I have a van door ladder and find it useful if I park right up to garages for jumping on to their flat roofs without the need for ladders, lol

You arn't in the know my friend, if the sl-x was 800 quid i would still have it. I paid 920 quid for a 44ft facelift carbon 18 months ago which is still going strong & has paid for itself many, many times over. Try doing a good job at 44ft with a harris pole! ;D ;D

My Sl-x was totally useless this week.

With my clamps keep coming loose, I reset my pole and used loctite, everything seemed fine until yesterday when my wife was using it and she couldnt use clamps 2 or 3 ,she couldnt budge them, for 1 job she had to use a screwdriver to prise open the clamps.

A £430 pole stuck in the van unusuable for 2 days.

Why do i bother !!!!

Should of stuck with my fall apart excels.

Its all right for you guys without a full workload, you can spend all day loving it and polishing it , but in the real world it can be a nightmare

I know what has happened, when you put loctite on the threads, rather than just putting a drop on the threads it must have poured into the lever pivot and has glued it up, rendering the clamps stuck shut. Bring it up to my place and I will clean the lever cams for you and reset them. Give us a ring in the morning and we can arrange a suitable time for you.

I must admit and if Groundhog asks i`m holding my head in shame but i also had problems with my clamps today also, they`ve been repaired by Alex and came apart again today. The pole sections were sliding down and i was pulling my hair out at 1 point and got the facelift out,i went to my step dads workshop and cut the 24ft facelift down to 21ft and used that instead for half the day.The pole is of really good quality but i can`t see me getting on with the clamps at all,if carlsberg made poles they would look like the SLX with facelift clamps.

Hi Alex

That is what i thought, I was thinking of dropping it down today but was too busy.

Dont know if i can get down before your hols, dont mean to be harsh about the pole, I still like it it even though it can be frustrating at times.

I suppose if it were set up right it would be a lot better, trouble is when i am at work I am always flat out so cant spend time doing adjustments etc.

Anymore thoughts about that gooseneck ?

I use my poles flat out all day, I too have a full work load (could do with 36 hour days & 10 day weeks atthe mo' )
I want to be in/out asap, no faffing, no hassle.

I set the sl-x's clamps up initially, just minor adjustments with allen key. found the cam/lever opperation a bit stiff, so, as said in another post i put a drop of 3 in 1 oil on the moving parts & this made all the difference. I have not put any loctite on the threads at all & the clamps work perfectly & have not required any re-adjustment since.

The clamps on my pole don't butt up flush, i'm not sure wether they should or shouldn't but i prefere them not to- as a small seperation between them aids a faster opperation & less fiddling IMO.

Dave @ st ives- have you oiled the cams on the clamps?

I think its the thread glue, I just dont have the time to sort it out, I spent an hour or 2 on sunday dismantling it and re- adjusting the clamps, had it working fine, must have been to happy with the loctite.

If you can drop it off any time Wednesday or Thursday I can sort it out and you shouldn't have to touch the clamps again. Give me a ring in the morning.

As for the gooseneck challenge you set me, someone else today had a thought about this for their own hard to access window and I do have an add on solution in mind that may sort the problem for you.

By the way we have the new stock of G-Fits in if you now want one for your SL-X, we have them in 2 slightly shorter sizes as well.

Alex, I've got the same problem, my clamps are terribly stuck, please tell me what to do!!!  :-[  :-[  :-[  :(

When the manual say a drop or two it really means it!!

To cure an excess off threadlock, undo completely the clamp bolt and cleanall of the parts: Bolt, Lever arm, nut peg (this will be what is glued up and it will need pushing out from the lever arm), cam shim and clamp body.

Once you have cleaned all the excess threadlock then re-assemble and tighten to the right setting.

Now reapply the threadlock, it does help if you hold the bottle at an angle so that the dropper is uppermost and just let the end touch the thread and 'suck' a drop off. Allow no more than 2 or 3 drops to go on the thread. After it has run down the thread wipe any excess off. The threadlock is powerful stuff and you only need a small amount.

As soon as we realised that the Factory had not applied this as standard to the threads, we started applying it to each pole that went out.

I always keep the allen key in my pocket for the occasional nip if required. I have my clamps adjusted so that they just stop the sections spinning. Now and again i'll adjust on the fly by a tiny amount.

Dave St Ives,

shame I don't live near you 'cause I love the big jobs, the bigger the better. I love parking up for the day and not having to move my van. I don't begrudge you the awkward ones though.
The day you'll say no to a job is when you're home off work exhausted, run down, tired, aching, depressed and wanting to pack it all in, try to make some time for yourself.

You could always buy yourself a Harris pole for 15 quid!! My clamps are working just fine!!!!!  ;D ;D ;)

Just had my pole sorted by Alex, He removed the excess glue and lubed the clamps.

I cant believe its the same pole, so much better.

I think the biggest problem was mine was the first of the production line and I rushed Alex to have it ready on time for me.

The Slx has replaced two of my poles, and the wieght & ridgity of the pole is superb, I have 2 jobs that will test the full hight, but I will need the extestion for these.

Any news on this?

I think it is monney well spent.

Worryingly no news on the extension, which will mean that they haven't done them yet. We should have received them by now, but  do know that they have been held up with some glitches on other products they are making so this will have had a knock on effect on our production run.

Hi Bosh,

Drop me an email ( alex@agardiner.co.uk ) with your  contact details and when we return from our holiday I will send you the details. There are staff who will still be here to oversee the final stages of the transfer to the new premises over the next 2 weeks (2nd fix electrics, new windows/doors, carpets, toilets, etc,) whilst we are away, so hopefully by the time we get back from holiday the new premises will be fully operational.

You are more than welcome to test the pole range when you visit.

Just can't get the clamps to grip the pole correctly. Some sections are okay, but some slide down quite quickly, okay, that's solved by tightening the clamps, but when not extended, the clamp doesn't close because it's too tight.

Driving me nuts Alex.

Tim, Alex is on holiday at the moment. To cure your clamps use the loctite glue supplied with your pole.

Ok first extend all the sections a little and  tighten the allen keys ( or loosen ) until you are happy with them. Close all the clamps shut. Then apply ONLY 2 SMALL drops to the exposed thread on the outer side of the clamps ( read Alex instructions ) be careful not to get the stuff anywhere else on the pole.

Done properly this will certainly solve the problem but you need to make sure the loctite is covering all of that exposed thread so there is no room for movement.

Hi luke, yea I managed to do the loctite, I'm just saying that at closed length, the place where the clamps clamp the pole, is where they are slightly thicker, so you can adjust the clamps fine when the sections are slightly extended, but when fully closed, you just simply can't close the clamps anymore.

I see, you will simply get used to it. You just arent meant to close the pole at them parts. You close it about 2-3 inches away, thats how its meant to work. And when you set your clamps for use with the loctite DO NOT set them on that thicker bit of pole, otherwise it wont grip the rest of the pole. It seems that some people are having some teething problems, when you overcome them, youll be happy!!! Luke

Well, I appreciate your thoughts on it, but that's simply not true that it's supposed to be used that way, it didn't come shipped that way, and all pictures I've seen of the closed length show that there is a 5cm, 4,5cm, and 3cm gap between the clamps, not 2-3 inches, to further illustrate it, it wouldn't be 5'7 anymore closed, like it says on the website. Otherwise that'd simply be false marketing. Name me a pole that you have to do that with.

If you have to extend it another half an inch or so, multiply that by 5, and you have a 5" longer pole? What's the deal with that.

There is meant to be a space between the clamps, maybe not as much as 3 inches but thats how it should be used. Here is mine:

Just for a reference the Ionics poles also need bedding in and adjusting to just pinch the tube. (took me 2 weeks to realise that)

If this is the case with your pole then it will need to go back and be trimmed, mine was the same and had to go back and have the sections cut slightly. The tolerances on the pole you have are wrong and this will be the only way to solve it otherwise when closed the pole will be longer.

Yes we know that by now, the SL-X will still have your decorators pole for breakfast, lunch and dinner, clamps are not perfect, but they still do the job well.

Maybe you should refrain from posting something if you can't actually contribute to the thread.

And since you are representing a company (aren't you?), you'd do well to act more professionally.

I'm sure that they are, thats why decorators use them, because they are a quality, lightweight and hardwearing pole! How many decorators do you think have decided that instead of getting a harris pole they will pay out over £400 on a window cleaners pole instead? None! because they are not that stupid!!!!  ;)

I've been trying to figure out what company you do represent Groundhog, danne but you're good. Is it Ionics?

Brilliant cover, your acting stupid all the time, but that Harris pole was just a bit of idiocy too far. Who's going to beleive that? Are you cleaning windows or giving them a coat of emulsion?

If you ask me the real idiocy here is spending over £400 on a pole that has clamps that don't work, when you could get a quality pole for under £15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;)

I copied Dai's instructions from my thread 'Dai, advice on B&Q pole please' Its very simple, and the hose goes through the pole, you just have to drill a couple of holes. Give it a try and let me know how you get on.  :)

It is a 5 metre pole, but if you read the thread that I gave in my previous post, jeff Brimble I believe explains how you can make an extension for the pole.

I`ll tell you why people are having so much trouble with the SLX and that`s because there using a brush that`s to heavy,a heavy brush puts to much strain on the clamps.

I may well start my own thread on the Harris pole, but I think that this forum should be about us window cleaners helping each other out and exchanging tips and ideas, not about manafacturers advertising and pushing their products. I think that Gardeners are great and I use them reguarly, but if I can help other window cleaners save themelves a fortune on poles then I will, thats just what Dai did for me!!!  ;)

I like the clamps, they're fast & easy to use. My clamps don't butt up flush but to be honest i prefere them this way, especialy as they are so slim they are easier to use with a bit of seperation. If you mark the pole with a pen or summat just as it starts to taper out to the clamp this will give you a possitive guide to where to stop & clamp it, makes it easier & quicker this way with a visual guide. Top pole the sl-x. Far better than my harris- which is retired to trad work only! ;)

What may the manager of a commercial job that you charge 40+ pound per hour think when he sees you using a B&Q decorators stick? You know- the one who questioned your quote, so you had to explain about the investment & running costs of wfp ;D ;D :-[

The pole is made of alliminium and is silver in colour, it has black clamps and it is a 3 section pole, total length 5 metres (Jeff Brimble explains how to modify it into a longer pole on another thread) And for £15 it is fantstic value for money!! I really don't mean to dis your pole Luke, I just can't see that it is worth paying out that kind of money, when there is a viable alternative available for a few quid! A year ago i was telling everyone how brilliant a fishing pole was for £60 and although they are good they don't come close to a quality pole unfortunately. You can't beat telescopic for speed and you can't beat carbon for stiffness/lightness. No doubt the decoraters pole does the job but in a years time i doubt you will be so impressed. You usually get what you pay for in this world. The SLX is that good that i prefer it over my S2 for three storeys.

There is no unifrom way to run your business and so many things vary between people, their dislikes, likes, area they live in, budget, upbringing, race, religion, etc etc

This means that no business is identical and so many people love what others hate.....marmite!!!

It doesnt mean the SL-X is better. It means its better for you, and of course you can try and persuade people its better for them but they wont all listen, because the Harris pole is really the best thing for groundhogs business, because what he wanted out of a pole is fullfilled by the Harris, Luke

Had some first hand experience with the harris pole, and even though I appreciate your feedback sometimes groundhog, the harris pole is seriously rubbish, even the unger aluminiums are better, it was floppy, bad clamps, quite long when closed. Yea, it's cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I think you must have been looking at the wrong pole mate!!! the pole is about 6' when closed, its very light, very stiff and in my opinion the clamps are excellent and very easy to use!!! I've used unger poles and this is miles better!!! From what you have said above I seriously doubt that you have ever used a harris pole to clean windows with!! I use mine everyday and wouldn't change it for anything!!!

The label said Harris pole 5m.

Yes it is quite light, I must agree, which was nice, but the locking cones on the Unger are sturdier, I can know, because I have a 20', and whilst it's not as floppy as an Xtel, compared to the SLX it's quite floppy, and the closed length is not as practical as the SL-X. I just don't see how you comment on the SL-X when you've never used it. Seriously, it's in a completely different league. Just give it a go, you will be pleasantly surprised. :)

Sure if I had a low budget I would have gone with a harris pole, or something similar, but I have the budget to invest in good quality tools, that will last me ages, and trust me, I'm sure that I don't make as much money as you do, I don't have a full round yet, but still I will earn my money back with it.

To each his own I guess, I wouldn't be that unhappy with the Harris pole, but I would if I compared it to cleaning with the SL-X for a day.

Just try using the harris pole for cleaning windows for a couple of days and you will quickly realise that the clamps are excellent, incredibly quick and easy to use and so far they seem incredibly robust!
I haven't commented on the sl-x, I have simply tried to help other window cleaners not to be quite so easily parted with their money, when a more than adequate alternative is available for a few quid!!!

My harris pole paid for itself within the first 20 minutes of me using it, and I know for a fact that using an sl-x would not make the slightest difference to how quickly I can work or the quality of the clean!! that is why I will not be wasting my money!!!!  ;D

ive just been on gardiners website, and it says that the slx weighs 1540g and is 5ft 7" closed.

ive a harris pole that i have set up in the van with a soft flocked brush on, which i use on older painted windows, as the brush not so aggresive to the paint.
i dont use it all day just on a few older windows.
imo its a very usefull tool to have at a very small cost, im sure there is no comparison to the slx, but its not trying to compete.

Bentley works well on the SLX but doesn't have a lot of scrubbing power for first cleans and tends to get splatted against the glass due to the stiffness of the pole. I'm very happy with a Vikan mono at the moment untill Alex's new brush comes out.

Thanks Steve,
so approximately, SLx 1540g  5ft 7" but reaches higher.

        Unger is   1302g    6ft 6"   5.5
        Harris is    1156g    6ft 2"  5m

        Unger is   1302g    6ft 6"   5.5

So the £15 harris is considerably lighter than the £400+ SLx!!!  :o  ;D

haven't tried the pole but have used ionics, vikan and bentley brushes. I think i read on here that they last about 6 months or so. I might be wrong??
But what a crap brush when they have had a bit of use.
I checked a 1st clean the last time i used it (since dumped) and what a terrible result. Loads of marks that were on the window that should have come off easily.
Went over again with a vikan and was perfect. I don't have any work over 30 feet and would rather have a heavier brush that does the job.
I wouldn't recommend a bentley to anyone except maybe on maintenance cleans that have always come up good before.

I went to B&Q yesterday to buy one of these Harris poles that a few on here are going on about,i picked it up and extended it and LOL oh and then i LOL again, what a load of toilet. If you think you can clean window`s with that then you must either be a wishfull thinker or stupid,i should have gone by my gut feeling and not bothered.I take it the guys that use don`t clean window`s over 8ft or so,i can see it now it would be like fighting a crocodile trying to work with that.

I'm getting a bit fed up with this! Don't come on here and lie  >:( because to make the above statement you have clearly never seen or used a harris pole! I am going to try to get my son to make a short video of me using my harris pole and post it on youtube to put an end to this sort of garbage! The pole is great, I used it today fully extended to clean some windows above a conservatory, the pole was nearly horizontal, and managed the job brilliantly!

I too am having fun with the Harris pole. 10 years ago there was only the evergreen Unger (which I managed to get to 42ft) or the Excel to compare with, one high price the other low. Similar to today so not much changes as regards to choice.  But the Harris is an ideal starter pole and I am trying to remain objective. I do have the choice of the highest/lightest pole in the world at 420g for the same 5m height or at 432g a diy  F16

Having actually used the Harris daily for a few weeks now I find  the Harris is a serious pole for begginers and pros.

I guess Lukes thread is a never ending story as we all have our own preferences and budget.  :)

ps the bentley is the pits.

Thanks Steve,
so approximately, SLx 1540g  5ft 7" but reaches higher.

        Unger is   1302g    6ft 6"   5.5
        Harris is    1156g    6ft 2"  5m

So the £15 harris is considerably lighter than the £400+ SLx!!!  :o  ;D

Yes & half the length, numpty ::)

Pro's & conns, I, personally am a pro! ;)

Tony

err not quite, only 2.54m and you could always stick a £19  3.5m extension to it and/or also fit it to the SL-X ?

JEFF
are excel and x tel different poles?

I'm a pro too and what I look for is speed and ease of use. My garage is full of poles I never use - the big unger with conex connections- a four section trad ali pulex- a twenty four foot tele fg universal.......

They remain unused because I don't like them. And this has mainly to so with weight and time issues.

Groundhog promotes the Harriss  because it's cheap and it does the job. Jeff agrees with him, but to me this is penny pinching.

Excels are horrible heavy bendy monsters extels are a big improvent - smaller diameter, shorter collapsed length but still bendy if fibreglass. I had a 19' excel and threw it in my garage in disgust used a 21' extel for several weeks as a main pole and found it ok with a light brush.

He He, I guess all the questioning guys have loads of unused bits.
No idea bout the difference -sorry. I did pick a couple up at a show but they were way to heavy.

But its a learning curve and we all get there in the end. Some of the newer guys can do shortcuts if they listen to some of the advice here and not have to spend big bucks when they start.

i think you must have looked at the wrong pole, i have several profession poles, so have something to go by, one things for sure, it beats any x-tel glass fiber  pole, the one i have is very rigid with just a little bit of play, you have to be looking at the wrong pole, o and a painters pole, is no different from a wfp pole, they are all  telescopic, just different materials and clamps,

any chance of getting this thread deleted?

it started off with 'I love the slx so much blah blah blah want to have alexs babies blah blah blah'

now its really gone downhill 'my painters pole is the business, blah blah blah no its rubbish blah blah blah'

crap thread - just like the earnings threads.

no, it really is - I really don't mind the Alex G appreciation society but its gone too far, and as for slaggin off someone elses pole - whats that about?  Its them using it not you so whats your problem?

What your doing is your putting a brush on the end of a painters pole.

What I'm doing is putting a brush on the end of a pole, the same as you! the only difference is that yours cost over £400 and mine cost £15!!!
Why do you think that a decorators pole should be any different to a window cleaners pole? If anything they need to be more hardwearing! I will be posting my video on youtube tomorrow so that everyone can make up their own minds. ;)

Each to there own preference, as long as it cleans the windows and the customer is happy, what does it matter what the pole cost
