Title: Totally fed up
Post by: Frankybadboy on December 08, 2016, 05:49:06 pm
Fed up with little if no tips this last two weeks,so after every clean for the last couple of weeks I've been adding £3 to the bill for my tips ,so I then get a tip off everyone, and with 500 accounts this is now working very well.

I'd rather have decent prices all year round then praying on tips once a year. Tips  get less each year as people feel the financial pinch with deflation in relation to wage decreases and cost of living escalating.

Ive had £878.00 in tips so far this winter, 14 bottles of jubbly, a box of Christmas crackers, 7 tins of Quality Street, a couple of dead turkeys, 4 boxes of Tesco’s Mince pies, 4 gallons of diesel, a second hand lawn-mower and  a jar of 3” nails.

There's a garage in sunningdale called super Ventura that sells motors like that.
Iv seen Bugatti veyrons, pagani zondas and koenigseggs in there a few times.
If only I could get through 35-40 houses in sunningdale/Virginia water a day, I might be able to afford one.
Where's that link for the head torch again...

I thought he was winding me up when Frank told me he was doing this, until I popped over to see him on Tuesday and saw him do it!!!

Popped a slip through someone door, with a "+£3 (Xmas) " next to the price, I was in shock...

Just drove by 2 shiners cleaning a house traditionally. The guy up the ladder was wearing an elf costume and chap cleaning downstairs was in santa dress.  Not the warmest of costumes to be working in, but its one  way to perhaps get more tips if it means that much.

You’d feel a right twit if you went to work dressed like that and came home with zilch.

So far my tip experience this year has been £5.00. I gave it back to her, she’s a frail old bird, very gentle lady, who is caring for her husband who’s on his last legs. I know they (especially the old birds) don’t like tips to be refused but given their circumstances this year felt it more appropriate that way.

Once I went over to WFP tips just fell off the horizon for me.

Put it this way if I received a bill from a window cleaner with extra added on for a xmas tip I would tell them to go do one. I would also be mad as hell if vulnerable people like old folk in the family or friends where trying to be taken advantage of and received one too.

That is just bang out of order and fradulant if you ask me.

In all honesty this is not a wind up

I see it like this,I've continued to give a brilliant service to my customers over 11 years and thought that this year that a extra £3 each wasn't to much to ask ,the ones who normally give me £20 are actually saving money which I've been thankfully for
This week alone I've done £274 which ain't bad for a week and with two weeks left before xmas then I be doing better than last year

Daz would you like £20 paid back :-/

Your customers are paying the prices that YOU set and have set yourself over the last 11years.

Giving tips isnt a given requirement nor a legal expectation at december for window cleaners or the like. So if this isnt a wind up, your bang out of order for doing so.
Wonder if this story makes the paper.

Do you honestly expect people to be really grateful to you for being emoloyed by them in the first place! How would you like it, if after ordering your food at zay mcdonalds, whilst on lunch break and they had X amount extra as a tip. Or same principle at a restaurant??
Do you leave a tip when you go for a meal, or the hairdresser, the postman or even binman.???      If your giving yourself a tip, then im guessing you dont   :o

Heres a tip.........if you want more money, do it legit and get some more work or put your prices up accordingly.
Another tip, ask your clients if they want there windows cleaning this month because there is an extra 3quid applied in december and not the usual fare we agreed upon!!!

It isnt fair franky boy, wherez your sense of logic and reasonableness?  They CHOOSE to give you a tip!  They CHOOSE to give you a tenner. Thats the purpose of a tip, its given out of choice.

I am the dearest cleaner in my area and give a high skilled service and think I am worth it

Title: Re: Totally fed up
Post by: nathankaye on December 09, 2016, 07:17:48 pm
Theres no reasoning with you. The simple fact is, you can not apply a 3 quid tip to yourself and stick it on the bill without prior consent of a price change. Regardless  if you think your worth it or not.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, he added a compulsory tip to his end of year bill, so what Cruise ships ( one example )do it all the time which is what he will be able to book with all this extra tip money, fair play I just wish I had the guts to do it.

"Service charge" on cruise ships or whatever......you are notified of.
Plus the service charge is applied all the time, therefore an even better idea would be to put service charge on every clean you do for the same client. Not just applied in december

Yes but that would be a price rise and might drive customers elsewhere, this way most wont even notice and if they do well
your not going to dump somebody for a one off £3 payment, call it a Scrooge tax.

Come on, it cant be just me saying how wrong this is!  Yes great idea, im sure we've all thought of it at some stage in our many yrs of doing this work, but decided against it for a very good reason. No, its not down to having balls to do it, either.

As already stated, your customers have agreed a set charge for the agreed service. At that point it should be made clear that come december there is a X %age service charge applied. That would then be above board. Compared to just adding it and hoping they dont notice it and if so, think can excuse it as a service charge.

Yes restaurants or certain ones apply an automatic service charge. This is expected. However, after 11mnths of same charge and then charge a service charge unexpectedly or even after many yrs of service for a set fee and out of the blue, a service charge is somehow applied in december and not any other month. It is very questionable business behaviour, which im sure if officials looked at it, there would be trouble! (No im not saying they will am i threatning it, just to be clear if anyone takes this the wrong way)

Question:  obviously youve already been doing this, this month. What do you say to your regular client when they come to the door to pay you the normal payment?

i wont feel so guilty now :)

i am charging every customer on the round so it should bring in a extra £1500 roughly give or take a bit.now am i being stupid

Best wind up on here for ages.

But I'll play along and so here's a question Franky; if your customer isn't in and you leave a slip for payment and let's say it's a £20.00 job.

Do you write a bill for £23.00 and not mention anything or do you write something like "includes Xmas tip"? Or "includes discretionary tip of £3.00"?

Title: Re: Totally fed up
Post by: Tom White on December 10, 2016, 12:34:58 am
ive been cleaning lots of my customers windows for over 20 years but i wouldnt dream of just adding £3 to their bill at xmas!IMO its just plain wrong.i let the customer decide whether they d like to tip me at xmas(most dont but thats fine too)

They'd tip you better, Daz, if you didn't clean the windaz (is that where 'Daz' comes from?) like this:

Sort it out, mate, we use squeegies and wfp these days.

I presume this is a wind up but if is not, i genuinely feel sorry for you that after a year of window cleaning you have to resort to self charging for xmas tips to make ends meet over the festive period.
Maybe we should have a whip round for you!

I think it's wrong what he's doing but if customers are giving it to him then they must be thick minded .I remember a friend of mine used to clean windows and one year did just downstairs so every customer got a clean .one day a customer came out and said is it half price with just doing downstairs he said no its full price because it's Christmas, the customer said ok here you go full money a tip for you don't bother coming back to clean my windows

Thinking small. It should be 10% of annual billings. So on a £20 house that's £24 for the year.
Title: Re: Totally fed up

What's making ends meet got to do with it ? seriously do any of you guys run it past your customers and wait for all to answer when you up your prices, no you clean the property charge them the extra with a slip explaining why, he's charging them an
extra £3 one off service charge because they where too miserable to acknowledge his excellent service over the year, getting off
light in my books.
Maybe it will teach them not to take people for granted though I doubt it.

I agree but maybe taking £24 out in one go without notifying them might be pushing it, maybe another smaller tip at Easter
might be a better option.

You could put this in your terms and conditions on your website, which no-one ever reads, and then when they moan about it say ‘well its in your T and Cs’.

Could do for a tenner in that case next year.

Something like “On the last clean before the Christmas period we will charge you an extra £10.00 on top of your usual and regular clean price in an effort to maximise the level of festive tips we receive. We’d therefore like to take this opportunity to thank you all and wish yo all a merry Christmas and prosperous new year’.

I would also say adding extra to DD, PayPal, Go Cardless etc customers’ bill without prior notice & more importantly agreement before any works are carried out would amount to fraudulent practice. ::)roll

Wind up or not .........

Service charge ? you already charge for the service you provide each time you clean the windows  :-\
When did receiving a Christmas tip off of anyone for any line of business become expected ?
Probably no more than 20 % of my customers tip me either with a few quid extra or choccies or a bottle of plonk.
In no way do I ever expect, feel hard done by or fed up if given nowt.

I even have 3 or 4 customers that I give a little gift back to each year.

Yes but I bet those 20% will get a slightly better service than the others, for instance if for some reason you couldn't get x amount
of properties finished before Christmas I doubt any of the 20% would be on the list even though they all paid what's asked of them over the year.
Franky's way is fairer.

Well I have to say that's a 1st for me

Worked  a full day because it was going so well and I've never worked over 3hours on a Saturday

Then at 12 o'clock I started cleaning a old people apartment/bungalows on a posh site
And cause it was going so well I thought I push these prices up by a full £5 making them £15. And guess what not one person complained and two rounded it up to £20 as said I do a excellent job

Happy xmas off now for a snooze been a hard day

I agree, its too convenient...it must just be an excuse to get away with the scam!!
My post on the first page backing him up, I must be in on it as well, but I don't want to admit it due to fear of a backlash I may get from a load of window cleaners I don't know!!!
