Got a nice letter from Barclays today. They are doubling the monthly charge, so I will be paying around eighty quid a month for putting cash and cheques into an account?
It has forced me to change bank accounts and I might go Ltd at the same time.
Anyone recommend a good business account?

Join the FSB (£170 first year, IIRC, includes dozens of benefits) and get a free Co-op bank account.
You need a branch near you, though. Alternatively if the nearest branch is miles away, prepare to deal with the horror that is Co-op's arrangement with the Post Office that no-one at the Post Office seems able to deal with.

What tariff are you on mixed payments or e payments.
Im on e payments and get most of my customers to pay by bacs
I have though about changing banks but as you can't take the account number with you it would be a total pain to get hundreds of bacs paying customers to change.

I enquired in Santander recently, was told the business accounts start at £7.50 a month.

I don't think you get free banking for a new customer.
Coop ok for me. No charges if £1000 in current account. There is not a branch near me so I pay cheques in by post. Takes one extra day to clear and they provide postage paid envelope. I pay cash in at nominated post office and they charge me eighty pence each time.

Can you pay cash in now to your business account through your debit card or do you still need a cash deposit book etc?
£7.50 a month Santander
Thats for new customers by the looks of it.. i was originally with alliance & Leicester so i only get charged £5 a month or if i put more than 1k in a month its free.. its still on there Alliance & Leicester terms i think.. and Abbey.. now Santander is also on Abbey terms still i think.

Free banking with Santander is only free if it was originally an Alliance & Leicester account which can be used via Post Office.

In 4 years I've never had any problems what so ever regardless of how many cheques I pay in.

It's also still free if you have a Santander account that goes back a certain time.
They tried to force the £7.50 charge on everyone a while back. They failed. The key to it was that the original deal offered was "free business banking forever" (within certain parameters). The argument was that the word "forever" superceded any changes in T & Cs. e.g. if they had offered "free banking", it is just about accepted that they might withdraw that at a future date. By adding "forever", that was an inducement that got them a lot of customers.

Am I right in saying the Santander is a business account? So you can have your business name etc? A lot of people send me cheques to my business name so I need that.
I'm currently with rbs business, as im in the 2 year free period, but in a few months I'll we start being charged £30 a month.
So you can deposit cash in, pay cheques in, and customers can pay bacs in, all for just £7.50 a month?
Wow.
Think I might be switching if that's the case.

I was with RBS and went with scamtander, you know 'cause it's free an' that.
You get what you pay for.
I'm back with RBS.

Yes, the account is in the business name but they're pretty flexible accepting cheques paid in. I get cheques with 'window cleaner' as the payee! ::)roll or my name or company name. Only ever get them sent back if they're not dated.

I'm back with RBS.
What happened to make you switch back?
And do you just pay the rbs business royalties flat rate per month or per transaction? Think its £30 a month flat rate?
-
Scamtander decided to pay the lads double, told me it was their mistake, then had a change of heart a month or so later and decided I needed to get the money back off them. Not impressed.
I pay flat rate at RBS.

How much is the flat rate again?
I'll probably just do that aswell to be honest.

I had a weird issue with Santander a couple of years back. They wrote to me saying that they required proof from a solicitor of my business partner's death. Although the account number was correct, I have never had a business partner and the name that the letter was addressed to was not mine - even though the correct business name appeared on the envelope. I contacted them (looking up the number independently from the letter) in case it was some scam, No scam. Just yet another load of garbage from Santander. They "compensated" me with a tenner. I informed the banking regulator.
