Hi Guys
I left my van out a couple of nights ago in the frost, thawed out all my gear the next morning, lucky nothing damaged, went to fill tank and tds has gone up from 0 to 18,has anyone else had anything like this or is it just a coincidence and my resin has come to the end of its life,i have only had my wfp set up a few months my tds out of the tap is only 20 and was expecting my resin to last much longer than this.Any ideas anyone? ??? :'(
-
How many months have you had your resin for?
And how much water do you use each week?
-
Hope not my d/i vessels been outside for a week.
-
I have only had it about 2 months,i use about 700 litres a week
-
I believe it can, I always bring my DI in when cold, what size is you di vessel though, a larger one should last a good few months in fact longer with a tap tds of 20
-
Hi Stuart it is a 11 litre vessel
-
Your resin should be lasting about 6 months with a TDS of 20.

If it freezes in your DI vessel it's knackered..

Yes Richard it froze in the DI Vessel

Mine was frozen this morning and worked fine this afternoon?
-
Mines froze many a time and been fine as long as its defrosts probably .
-
it is more likely damage to the riser. take the top off and have a look . you can repair them or replace

Hi Toronto
How does this affect the reading please?
-
I just have the DI vessels in the house, and filter the water straight into the van so I don't need to carry em about wi me ;D
-
The bead's of resin, the actual individual resin ball's, swell up and crack open with frost, just like a frozen milk bottle. When this happen's, the bead's are not going to purify anything, so, yes, frost does knacker your resin. It wont kill it all at once but will kill some of it depending on how much of it has cracked open.

Good idea that,Thanks

I've had bagged resin outside down to -19 & it didn't affect it.

That would be without water on it though was it?

Yes. However, I'm pretty sure the resin bead does not actually absorb water into itself so is only suspended in the water. I think any problem with a freezing vessel isn't the resin but more likely riser tube seal etc.

Thanks Winpro,i will investigate riser today and report back

The resin vessels are not as robust as you think. The water runs in down the tube then up through the resin or vice versa. If all the seals are not fitting right, if say they had been frozen and the ice had deformed the riser tube, the water will be running through without going anywhere near the resin.

That sums up what I meant. ;) All the seals in a vessel (vessels differ internally) must be sealing properly for it to do it's job effectively, if not then you get problems.

Either sheer coincedance, or not, but I took a reading of my water today and it was 001, it was def 000 at the beginning of the week ;D
My vessel was frozen so the myth could be true ;D

Yes Richard it froze in the DI Vessel
In that case Sean, it's KNACKERED..
-
in future always bring DI vessels inside overnight during very cold nights.i never leave them in the van or outside.my bag or resin however is always stored in my storage space outside and it always works fine when i come to use it.
regards

Got a bag of resin it is 3yrs old been stored in a polytunnel last year through bag weather it is now stored in a shed , still fine.
-
I took it all to bits today
1- Resin in the water tank
2-Resin in Pump pre filter
3-Riser basket inside DI full of Resin
Emptied tank and flushed out, cleaned all the above and while fitting tap to tank outlet managed to cross thread fitting,so ordered new one next day delivery, hope to get it all back working again tomorrow.
Im hoping the problem was the riser basket was full of resin and unable to rise to the top, allowing resin to flow into the water tank.

sean you should of got the guy out of "some mothers do have em!" to help you out.he probably would of done a better job!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Got to the bottom of the problem, riser basket was full of resin and unable to rise and seal off,so resin and untreated water were flowing into my tank, had nothing to do with the Frost at all and probably caused by myself shaking the resin vessel. ::)roll :)
