Mistake number one. Second guessing what people think and thinking they've all got the same attitude as you. Guaranteed 100% to fail.

Second guessing people gets you on in life if you have a knack of sussing
someone out 5 minutes after meeting them,if you get a 20 year old stay with you for years and years fair play to you all I'm saying is he's either not the sharpest tool or he's led a sheltered life. Window cleaning more often than not is not something you start it's handed down then expanded on over the years and that's in the main the way it is,you don't get many 20 year olds these days 4 year earlier say to there teacher when I leave school Miss I'm gonna be a window cleaner. That's why most  20 year olds who do the job have a story or baggage.

Yes we tell people its hard now to start up in out field of work, to build up a round and make it work to pay the bills etc etc.
Yet more and more are coming into this field of work on what they perceive to be easy using a wfp system. They see or hear stories of how much we charge per house and how that equates per hour. It wouldnt suprise me at all if ones dont wish to finish school and start to build their empire up.

A lad in a family whos windows ive cleaned for 15 yrs looked in back of van and saw all equipment and his first comments were "all this for just cleaning windows"
Followed by you charge my dad x amount and theres n theres n theres x amount. You must be on a good per hour rate!!

Hes coming upto leaving school this year and asked if i need an apprentice

Makes no difference in reality to pay for household bills run a vehicle etc going out and knocking doors will not get you a business in a short time,yes there are more people it seems cleaning windows these days but unless you see there books you have no idea if there earning money from it. Hell of a lot of work out there I agree,also a lot of crap work nobody wants to clean out there too. If your prepared to take on any job you may get work that doesn't mean you'll have business or even be doing the job in 2 years time.

Its more to do with the person and their attitude than age...

my best guys are in their late twenties ( started in their early twenties ) and been great - they clean more and longer hours than i ever could do.  just taken on an apprentice who has a great attitude to work. and i have a chap who's now 61, never misses a day, never late, never sick.

we have had to throw some back into the great unwashed both oldies and noobies in life rich tapestry, usually know within 4 weeks if they are a keeper or not

Then its the employers business to motivate them. To get the best out of them. Of course you can assume they’re going to be brilliant without teaching, showing or encouraging them, in with case you will undoubtedly waste your time.

Had a new lad start today. After my last disaster with a druggie/alkie who although he had 25 years window cleaning experience was a total tw@t I figured Id try a newbie.


So, after a bit of searching, not much to be honest, I had a young lad start this morning. Seems reasonable, steady Id say. Quiet, gets on with whatever needs doing.


Im thinking as things are today that its newbies rather than older people is the way to go. I may be proved wrong but it was interesting working with him today.

What's the number 1 thing on a 20 year olds mind it's not work in most cases and it's certainly not window cleaning,most people that ask me for a job that age see me home a lot of the time before 5 o'clock that's the attraction to them. I get all the comments we've all heard have you got any jobs I'd like to work your hours,they all come from that age group the new generation are not work minded there's to many dreamers thinking they can all earn living sitting in front of a computer game,imo if they don't have bills to pay they will never be reliable why would they i was the same I've lost count how many days I turned over and farted and went back to bed,bit more tricky doing that when you've got things to pay for.

It's good to see keen young people actually applying for jobs.....it should be encouraged. In my home town, the superb, 50 years trading pastie shop has had to start closing on Saturdays because (after 3 advertising attempts) they can't find a single person willing to start work at 6am on Saturdays. There are 2000 unemployed people in town.

Same here although I aint a super old codger like you, yet.

From 18 - 30 I was flat out working all the time, I just don't have that level of energy nowadays.
