Hi guys,

Had an enquiry from someone who owns a rental property. After renovating the whole property, some light fingered oik from the planet dork has helped themselves to the brand new heating pipes. This resulted in all the central heating water, containing inhibitor (Poss Fernox) soaking the carpets in the lounge and dining room. I'm told the (brown) carpets are now dry but there is a light'ish area on both carpets. I haven't seen the carpets yet but I'm told there not wool. I'm thinking a high alkaline product is the way to go on this but................does anyone know better?

I should add that as this was a new heating system there wasn't the normal 'gunk' you would expect from an older system.

if its a man-made fibre I would do a burn test to identify the fibre then go in with a basic neutral  rinse and see how it responds. just going in with a high Ph is not a good idea.

perhaps testing the stain with  distilled water ( buy it from halfords) and litmus paper with tell you the Ph of the stain, from there you will have a better idea on how to proceed.

with any luck it might be a cheap polypropylene, if its a nylon then the fernox might have attacked or chemically altered the dyes (within the dye sites) so removal could be impossible.

if after a neutral rince you get no improvement then a would first proceed with an opposite PH from what has been identified by your litmus test.

That's a good enough answer for me Mike. Never come across this before so just looking for suggestions really. It may well be their better off replacing but won't know untill I see the job next week.
