Possible Scam
« on: April 15, 2010, 04:18:39 pm »
I have received two emails from Paypal saying my credit card with them has expired and i need to update my details!
I clicked on the link they had and it looked legit, but i was not convinced so i, went and Googled Paypal and accessed my account i could find nothing about "needing to update my card details" it may be legit but any email asking for bank details rings alarm bells.
You have been warned lads

Jim

You are right to be cautious.  If you had followed the email request thro from the email you would undoubtedly given your details to scammers.

Just forward the whole email as you received it to    spoof@paypal.co.uk

You will get a standard reply initially, followed within 24 hours by another saying it was spoof (or not).
From the details you send, by sending the whole email, they can follow it through as well and hopefully trace the blighters down.

If you have clicked on the link you may have given them access to your computer. They may be able to monitor your keypresses and obtain passwords.
Maybe someone else can shed some light on this. It happened to us some time ago and they managed to capture our ebay password and put scam items up. Luckily it was on a non business home computer so no great damage was done. I would be wary about logging on to any online banking etc until someone can enlighten you further.

I've got 4 separate email addresses and get these a lot, and the idiots can't even send it to the right email address, i.e. the one registered with Paypal  ::) so you know straight away its dodgy.

James,

If anything is legit it will be addressed to you personally and will ask you to log in.

Anything addressed to dear paypal customer is fraudulent (as per Derek's reply)

If it is a company / trading credit card, you do have to provide details. They then deposit a couple of small amounts (under a pound) into your account. You the have to check your statements and then confirm with Paypal what they were. I actually quried this with the spoof@ people and they said it was fake. It turned out to be genuine!

If in doubt do nothing.

Jim  a legit query would also come from ebay messages and ask you to update card details via your
paypal account. NEVER  do this from a web link in an email.
i have had legit mails about this from ebay as my back up credits cards exp date was running out;

So log in via the correct URL address and safe surfing
"So basically its a big vax!"

John I think if you click on it you verify that its a legit email address and is therefore worth more money for hacker to sell on to his clients(spammers). If somebody fills in the info and is fooled by it then its worth even more.
Not sure about access to the computer though but I would say they can

Yes it happened to us. We were in a rush to get out and someone checked the emails before we left including clicking on the dodgy paypal one. The next week we got 55 phone calls in one day asking about the Porsche we had for sale. They had a Porsche for sale on Ebay using our account details. It was very cheap and they were obviously looking to catch more people when they clicked on the link on the page. Ebay told us when we clicked on the link it allowed the spammers to capture our key clicks they then hope they can see you logging in to your bank account and clean you out. Thats how they got our Ebay details when we logged in later.Luckily this happened on a home computer which we don't do any banking or business on. They wouldn't have got through the security on the other systems.
If this happens, run a virus check and use another computer to change all your account passwords.

I just wish that one of you guys had received this email first and warned me :'( but the forums help all of us in some quite unusual ways.

If you dont hear from me for some time you know why :-X, so thats why noone told me ::)
