Hi all,

I have noticed that many areas are now "no cold calling zones", which have be created to deter rogue traders & high pressure sales people, & I wondered what the etiquette is regarding canvassing, as the signs say report all incidents, & then gives a phone number.

I have been reading into this, & utility meter reading, charity workers, religious people, & surprise surprise party political workers are allowed to cold call.

I do understand that it is needed to stop distraction burglary & rogue traders, but does anyone know if there is a licensing scheme where you can obtain ID of being legitimate, or is there no such thing?

I have these areas canvassed twice a week and not had one person tell me no knocking/called the number/ or been rude, if anything these can benefit you as your comptition wont canvass so you could do well, Ive had customers tell me there so glad we knocked as wanted a window cleaner for a long time, if anyone does say anything just appologise and move to another street, as youve said I think there to stop the rip off drive way merchants etc but as your offering a service youll be ok......

ITs not against the law to knock in this type of area, infact you should do quite well !!!!

I wouldn't knock but I would deliver leaflets - with notes attached explaining why I hadn't knocked.

Picked up 5 jobs in 1 road with less than 50 Bungalows.only leave card to those that are out,!!!Why just leave leaflet when you can talk to them?? thay dont mind once they realize your a window cleaner.

Many thanks for the replies.

It seemed kind of threatening reading about these "zones", as if you could end up in legal trouble if you start knocking doors.

I think it`s crazy really, because I think a legitimate trading ID/licence would be more useful to both trader & customer, & it made me laugh to see that political electioneering appears to be allowed.

I still knock these areas just like the doors that have " No Salesmen Or Canvassers" on them. Most of the time they are greatful ive knocked

but YOU CAN knock,  it's to deter dodgy traders, thats why they will be reported

I feel before they put these stickers on there doors they should tell everyone what law you will be braking or quote it on the door. If it was me I would ask the council what law it was.So I can read it up.

well i had a read on my local police website and cant find any exceptions. and it also mentions legit business selling but using hard sales tactics, but it is very vague on the outcome if caught and whether it is actually criminal

I don’t think it is e- legal to know on door just some do gooder made some stickers and sold they for money. As usual no one quite knows the legal stance.
