mine is a 13hp and seems to use hardly any at all. fill up tank and never have to refill it on a normal job.worked two full days once and it used about a tenners worth

There's your problem, close the choke to start it and once its started open it up fully, that's why your using more petrol.

What?? 

The choke should only be used to start the pump, once started, you should use the throttle to regulate the speed of the engine.  Having the choke open at all when running will drink fuel.

you never use it with a choke on else you will use lots of petrol,soon as its ticking over turn the choke off.
you will kill the engine using it with the choke on.

When Jeff say's open the choke up, what he means I hope is pull the choke lever to off. This opens the choke flaps in the carb. It is in this position that choke is actually fully off. Confusing I know but everyone is correct.

OK then... choke ON to start the engine and OFF when engine running.

There's your problem, close the choke to start it and once its started open it up fully, that's why your using more petrol.

Well what ever way it is its not the way he's doing it     

I thought if you close the choke the butterfly closes the chamber to allow very little air in (Choke) and when the engine is running you open the choke? to allow the air in  but what ever way we call it or do it, I'm sure the poor guy knows what we mean and can begin saving his petrol

i know what ya mean. i will adjust choke accordingly and see what happens.
