Running can do as much damage as good if you don't do it carefully. Running on grass is a big one. Pounding the road really shakes up the joints. Espescially once you are past the first flush of youth.

Actually, walking is almost as good for you.

i do the hour of power three times a week and endurance lift twice a week this is perfect for our job as it works the upper body aswell as the lower body which running doesnt do, if you want to learn what this is look at www.fitness4x4.com this form of training is superb and look at the condition of the founder and he is 61 years old.

Cardio work is the way to increase fitness and burn fat. If you've got bad knees you need to use a bicycle or exercise bike because running is gonna mess your knees up more. A heart rate monitor will be the best investment you will ever make if you wanna get fitter. It will keep you in the zone!

the main thing i find that hurt with wfp is my shoulders from the constant extending of poles, i have always suffered with poor shoulders though for some reason, even when i used to go the gym all the time my shoulders were my weak point

im 38 years old and been window cleaning for 16 years.i no longer drink anymore(3 and a half years sober)and i stopped smoking for 13 months a while a go but started again a few months ago! ::)

im planning on stopping again from tommorow one day at a time and start a bit of light swimming again and eating a bit better.do any of you guys do anything to improve your health to keep up with your workload?

im feeling pretty unhealthy and all of my 38 years today! ::) ::)

regards
Im 33 and feel pretty unhealty to i have never smoked and hardly ever drink but do like my food.I use to run 20+ miles a week i could run 10 miles straight off but that was 5 years ago and it's hard to get back into. But ive started eating less and am going to get out on the bike more and do more walking im not sure about the running again it jars the old knees, i remember how good i felt when i was lighter and want to get back there only 2/3 stone to go.

If you are planning to keep up the running it might be worth investing in a pair of the air cushioned running shoes.  I have a Nike pair and as well as being incredibly light they are so easy on the knees - makes running a real joy now.  Bought them cheap on Ebay brand new.

Yep, I agree but go to a proper running shop where they can put you on a threadmill and look at how you run and get shoes that match your impact on the road. sooo important! ive been running for about 28 years now on a regular basis (now 39) but for the past 10 years I always get checked for each pair of trainers. It doesnt cost anymore than going into your local JB sports etc.

Rowing machines give a brilliant all round workout.
Cardio, legs, back, abs, arms etc. etc. (no  weather worries)
Until very recently I did indoor climbing.
