Leaded windows first clean tomorrow
« on: April 01, 2010, 12:12:43 am »
Basic stuff here but Im still a newbie ... doing a first clean on 1 I canvassed other day and all windows leaded.

Would it be right to use Tbar then a dry scrim or just use wet scrim then dry scrim ... found ettore squeegee off to be a great product

Ian I used to soak 1 scrim in the bucket then ring it out, then use this to wash the windows then a dry scrim to dry and polish.
one bit of advice I would give mate, you dont need to scrub hard with the scrims/microfibre, imagine you are dusting the windows.

Best of Luck

I use a light window cleaning spray from Tescos (Mr Muscle or something) and scrim or preferably microfibre.

I'll give the windows a light mist (if they're not too dirty - more if they are) and start handbashing.  I'd probably use two scrims, one to loosen the muck and a bone dry one to polish.

I hope you charged well because leaded windows aren't much fun doing trad.  ;D

Depends how dirty they are,  if they r really bad i would clean them like you would a normal window but just straight strokes with squeege, and then windowlean/mr muscle and microfibre. If not just the latter. :P

I use to throw the scrims over my shoulder between windows, lovely to have a wet shoulder and back in winter lol

Yeah, it depends on how bad they are. Give a swipe with your T-bar if they are dirty then dry and polish. I also do this in direct sunlight. However you wet the window, try and dry/polish before it dries off. It makes it easier.

Also do as Matt says, a more light dusting action (doing more passes) is better than a few vigorous wipes.

Hi,

And not forgetting no soap just water or window spray ie; Mr muscle. Only use soap ie; fairy, squeegee of with an applicator & squeegee.

If you do use soap with cloths it will be covered in smears when the sun shines.

I usually go over it with the tbar then squeegee of most of the water just in straight up and down lines then get a wet cloth rub the rest off and buff it up with a bone dry scrim comes out gleaming :P

I have never had smears on leaded and I used fairy back then!
All you have to do is make sure that the wet cloth/scrim takes the dirt off, then polish with a dry scrim/microfibre, the only time you get smears using the "rag & polish" technique is when you let the water on the window dry before you polish it.
