Leafleting before knocking
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:13:27 am »
Is leafleting before door knocking really worth it, isn't the leafleting just a waste of your time you might aswell have knocked in the first place it's double the work and time.

the idea is to drop the leaflet when someone doesnt answer. then follow up in the evening with a knock again.

Hi Formb
So how long has it taken to build them? I saw in a previous post you get 1% response, is it really sensible to suggest this to a newcomer as you must have posted 300,000 leaflets..... Thats gonna take a while.....

Started putting leaflets through doors in 1992. I would say 300,000 would not be too far off actually. What we do is when we get a customer we will put leaflets through their neighbours doors every time we are there.

1 house 15 mins. 2 houses 20 mins.

So we actually put out anywhere between 20 - 200 leaflets EVERY DAY.

I have never bought, and will never buy anything on my door step. Therefore I have never sold, and will never sell anything on someone else's

To be fair, when my Dad started the business in 1992 he had another business which was generating income so a gradual build of of customers was do-able, had he not it may have been different......

Leafleting doesn't take the same amount of time as door knocking. How could it? When you're out delivering, you're not out for a gentle walk, you're almost running between houses. As you're walking up to the door, you've got the leaflet in your hand and you're looking for the letter box. It's high-energy work - or you're not doing it properly.

(My wife taught me this. She used to do Betterware and did really well at it. It's a numbers game. Her averages were the same as in other areas, but she got more books out in less time.)

Knocking on doors is VERY slow in comparison.

Right click on the link to save it to your computer. After that, you need to get it from your PC to your phone. It depends on your phone.

My phone's a Motorola and I can connect to my PC via a cable. Some use bluetooth.

About a year ago, I leafletted a small area and I eventually got one job from it a few months after leafletting.
I later found out that a shiner who I know well door knocked the identical area about a month after me and got four.  I know the area was identical because it was one specific road.

gd you will get aa much better hit rate if u leaflet before a canvass. Trust me i should know as i have done it. I only go out looking for big dirty houses nowdays but i do get a responce back. You cant beat a customer from a leaflet drop as you know they want your service unlike being canvassed as some people find it hard to say no. My best customers are from leaflets just ends up being fewer than canvassed ones.

The choice is yours. I began by door knocking, and once I got enough to get started would keep knocking on doors until I got another new customer. I would  continue in this way until I had established myself enough to wait for the work to come to me.

Never used leaflets myself. Others swear by them.

Best wishes,
John.

Door knocking and Leaflet dropping both have advantages, door knocking gets more results than leafleting initially, but if you only door knock and ask them are they interested in a window cleaner and they say no thats it end of story.
but if you drop a leaflet or flyer then they MIGHT keep that leaflet with all your contact details on and they may ring you in the future.
I still get people ringing me now, thats from leaflets I dropped before Christmas!!

is there a code of ethics for canvassing, what if they allready have a window cleaner, do you try and compete or walk away.
