« on: July 19, 2005, 06:45:22 pm »
Hi everyone, i just need a bit of advise form you very experienced lot!! lol. I have been cleaning domestic properties for a month now as my own business. Now I have been asked to clean carpets too! The problem is the type of equipment I should use i.e a karcher or a rug doctor style for general small home/office? And not having alot of spare cash should I hire, or will this break the bank!

Hi Sonya,

We all have to start somewhere & the best way of starting out would be to get yourself enrolled on a carpet & upholstery cleaning course, or possibly go to an open day and meet other carpet cleaners. The courses will teach you what you need to know about cleaning, spotting, different detergents, fibre identification, and the different types of machinery available. You will also find out if this is the type of work that you want to progress into. To clean carpets properly means buying the right equipment and these do not come cheap. You will find that the rug doctor and small karcher will not be man enough for the job. The other option for the time being would be to contract the work out to a professional carpet cleaner until you are ready.

Hope this helps

Derek Walker.

Hi Sonya

My advice would be to get yourself a second hand machine for a few hundred poinds rather than a few thousand for a new one if this is only a small area of your work. It may take too long to recover the initial outlay otherwise. Do this after your training of course.

Hi sonya,
You can get 2nd hand machines from any carpet cleaning equipment retailers, but if you wish to cut out the middle man and get a bargain you are better off looking at Ebay, or even better on here.
If you find a machine you like, but are not sure, just put a post on this site stating what machine it is and you will find these guys will give you all the advice you need.
