Truck Mount Issues
« on: March 23, 2010, 04:21:40 pm »
Hi everyone,

Its been a while since we have posted on here. I have a porrly Blazer XL. After 700 hours of running the engine seems very poorly. Does anyone know what model is used so I can find a replacement? Has anyone else replaced one? How much do they cost? The company I originally took it too for repair said they are disposable engines and would cost me almost as much to repair as it would to replace, is this true?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Dave

Dave I see you are in Bedfordshire so have you spoken to Alltec.I have just got back from there as they were doing some work on my steamway 9100lx and must say i was impressed with  their knowledge and friendliness so as they service/repair all types of truckmounts i would suggest you give them a bell.Regards Alan(swindon)

Yep,

Give them a ring allways courteous and help full, Chris and the team know their stuff, Chris used to work for Briggs and Stratton so knows his stuff.

If you go over there take your sandwiches, the van comes round at about 9 and thats it, there is no where to go for a brekky.

BUT they give you all the tea and coffee you want.

Good luck.

700 hours and looking for a replacement ??? ???

I'd suggest maybe try to get a bit more familiar with servicing, and why it is so important.  Not being all high and mighty, just sounds like you haven't been looking after it, 700 hours is still a baby!!

700 hours for any engine is a very small amount.  Of course some engines will/do develop problems regardless of how it has been serviced.  Had a guy call me many years ago that thought his engine had seized and was told that a new one was going to cost about £1400.  After a good chat on the phone the problem was fixed, the vac blower had seized.  After telling him how to unlock the blower he was back on the road very happy.  Since then i have done 90% of his machine servicing and work with him from time to time.

Alltec are your best bet. New engine in region of £1,000 if purchased direct from a Briggs dealer or lawn mower service centre.
I had a small Briggs in my Steamway, engine went after 2,500 hours (My fault) less than £1,000 to replace, fitted myself.
If its running ropy after 700 hours, I bet its just the air filter that needs replacing. If you havent changed ot for some time it will draw oil up from the crankcase and clog it further. Those engine like to breath, a LOT, if the filter gets only partly clogged it can be enough to stop the engine - check it out.

It really is process of illimination.
1,  Remove the safety cut out wire from right hand side of the engine, this will bypass all safety cut outs, if engine runs ok then you need to go through all the safety cut outs on the machine one by one to see which one is bad. (check the one in the vac tank first)
2,  Check / replace air filter (even a clean looking air filter may be restricting air)
3,  Check / replace spark plugs.  Spark plugs these days are pre-set.
4,  Check / replace fuel filter (even a clean looking fuel filter can restrict fuel flow)
5,  Remove belts from engine to vac blower. If engine runs ok then there is a restriction in vac blower (maybe burnt foam on the lobes) or the pre heater under the vac blower is clogged....remove pre heater, clean then replace
6,  Unbolt the exhaust from the engine, if engine runs ok then there is a restriction in the heat exchanger.

All of the above are the easiest and cheapest ways to do a self diagnosis.  If you do all of the above and the engine still running rough then you will need to contact a professional.

Hope this helps.

I never said it wasn't services, I just said it was only 700 hours old. It's been serviced plenty by us and Pro-Chem. It's now in the capable hands of Alltec. They have tries to repair bust a piston has snapped and smashed around causing damage.  A new one it is.

I have to say Alltec have been top notch in sorting us out. They have even taken the machine out of the van so I can still runthe business whilstthey sort out replacing the engine.

Thanks everyone else for your advice, especially the guy who pu me in contact will Alltec.

Exact same thing happened to my Briggs engine. Wrong grade of oil was to blame and not enough. Up to replacement I used Briggs oil, which is far too thick and quickly gums up. It takes ages to refill and so its easy to not put sufficient in, as it looks full on the dipstick. Very slow to drain too.
Anyway new engine and switched to fully synthetic. Expensive but worth it. Quick fill and drain, and still looking clean ages after, and as Andrew says still going strong to this day.

CVC.

If i were you id ask Alltech to replace the Briggs engine wit a Kohler engine.  Having spken to eales that supply both these engines they all say that the Koler engine is far better.
