I think most business is won face to face. Gives people the chance to see what sort of person you are.
I even canvassed a road and kept a note of who was out last time and tried again.
How long will it take? Depends. But remember once you have a customer you should keep them for a while, so your work will build, but it will take some time to earn a living from it.

Knock them doors leaflet the ones that are not in. I found saying to people ' would you like your windows cleaned for 6.50/ £7.50/ £10.00( waht ever you charge) a month or fortnightly worked better for me. Rather than just do you need a window cleaner. cause i found so many people will turn you away because they think your price is goona be too high. also when i first started i  had all my new customers on fortnightlys so i was out more the more , The more you are out cleaning the more you get noticed.

Any ways best of luck

Jay
