Just how nice as I???
« on: March 17, 2010, 02:58:46 pm »
Hi all.

I have the cleaning contract for a Plymouth night club and have had it for the past seven or eight years; the owner is more a family friend than a boss now, and he recently asked me to let him know when I was next cleaning the carpets as he had a "small rug" that was minging and could do with a going over.

Well, I let him know they were due and he asked me to give him a hand with the rug as it was a bit big to carry over from his flat alone!!!

Christ, I've seen smaller rooms!!

It turns out to be a very nice but very minging twenty year old Chinese rug, about 10' x 6' and to be honest, having never cleaned a Chinese rug before I wasn't keen to start with this one. However he simply said to just clean it like I usually do and if it comes up nice fine, if not he'd bin it - he's a rich night club owner with a very nice house in Spain ;)

So, I thought sod it; pre-sprayed it and went ahead with warm water and my hand tool and it come up a flippin treat. He was well pleased, and so he should be.

Anyway, he asked me how much I owed him today and, due to him having recently given my nine year old lad a rather nive flat screen tv recently I told him not to worry about it.

My question: How much did I save him????

At least your hourly rate multiplied by how long it took you.

Or

the cost of a new one had it all gone pear shaped.

He is a decent bloke; never let me down or lrft me chasing money; always pays on a Monday for the previous week's work, not like some I've had!!

I was just curious as to the average cost of cleaning a rather dirty Chinese rug - it took me about an hour and a half :)

one and a half hours for a 10 x 6 rug, 'flippin 'eck, remind me not to ask you to help me out on a busy day, we would be there all week on a 4-bed house. what did you use, an edging tool??

I normally charge £1.00 per sq. ft. and extra for the fringe depending on state, so that would be £60.00. As Colin said that's a long time for a 6'x10' rug-10 to 15 mins is normal if already set up, but I would have done what you did under the circs, can't underestimate the power of good will. Mike, oh, and I assume you had acid rinse in your machine or misted it with same after, as this is essential to the "feel" of a Chinese. :)

I doubt that you could vac it properly in 10-15 mins, but then we all do things differently I suppose
If there isn't enough time to do the job right,  how do we find the time to go back and do it again when the customer is not happy ?   Do it right the 1st Time.

Went to look at a rug yesterday, 7mtr x 5 mtr !!  :o

100% wool its brand new, she wants it scotchgarding, got £3.00 per sq mtr plus another room 8 x 6mtr to clean and scotchgard.

It pays to use the scotchgard logo in your marketing.

We certainly do Mark. On a 20 year old minging rug I would use a power vac pile lifter- 2 mins or less pile side, 1 min or less reverse side. You really should try one.  Mike
