Never looked on here before, as I'm a window cleaner, but I have a problem with stains on a carpet. They're pretty well all round the room at the edge, I think they're dust marks coming up a from wooden floor where an over enthusiastic fitter used the stretcher to heavily and has presumably pierced the underlay letting the dust rise through.
Can these marks be removed with standard carpet shampoo, they've been there for quite a while.

MODERN DAY VACUUM CLEANERS DON'T GO RIGHT TO THE EDGES, HENCE THE EDGES OF THE SKIRTS RETAIN THE DUST/DIRT WHICH OVER A PERIOD OF TIME TURN INTO BLACK LINES. IF YOU CAN GET HOLD OF A PRE-SPRAY WHICH IS USED FOR CARPET CLEANING, A STIFF BRUSH AND A LITTLE EFFORT THESE MARKS SHOULD EASILY BE REMOVED. HOPE THAT IS OF HELP

Draught marks. Ultrapac or citrus concentrate or enz-all will remove this (followed by hot water extracion). DONT DO IT YOURSELF THO! get a carpet cleaner in!

Dick and Roger are both correct as to the causes ie carpet fitter damage and poor vaccing.

A good vac with a crevice tool can remove some but often they are very difficult to remove and need something strong like ultrapac renovate etc as Tony said, together with a good scrub and then water extraction.

............ and your all forgetting to mention it will just come back again, unless you get them to do something about it.

if my custys want draught marking removed  , i charge extra, and even then i dont guarantee complete removal and personaly i prefer not to take on the task of removal, after all who wants a call back after a feeks saying they are back.

I'll stand beside you Geoff (both with our tin hats at the ready). It's the exact same methodology I use. And lets not get into an argument about the rights of charging extra as it may all depend upon what you are charging for the basic (without draught mark removal) clean.

Draught marks or the correct term, filtration marks, caused by fine dust particles being drawn up into the room from gaps between floor boards and skirting bases are difficult to remove, as they are at their worst at the base of the pile.
Over vacuuming at the edges can actually make it worse as the fine dust is drawn through through even more. We often see this happen before our eyes when that red brick dust suddenly appears at the skirting.
As said Ultrapac Renovate and similar can do a good temporary job, but they will return.
