the reason your TDS is high when you first switch it on is because of "ion creep".
When the ro is not running the ions creep back through the membrane to the pure water side.
I used to wait for the TDS to drop before connecting to the resin but I don't bother now.
I wouldn't worry so much, my merlin is still great after 2 years and I've only changed the prefilters once!
Your pressure is low though, your TDS and output will increase dramatically if you got a booster pump. My TDS is 220, pressure 80-100psi and without a water softener I usually get 10-18 ppm.
