What's a decent percentage to be taking if your being subcontracted? And how many of you regulaly work for a subcontractor?

If you are subcontracting to anyone just bear in mind that he should deduct tax at source to give to the tax man.

They would only deduct tax if you are working in the construction industry, = CIS The taxation scheme applied to contractors and subcontractors working within the construction industry.

If you are a business with a trading name and pay tax at the end of the year I think you just give them an invoice.

If in unsure check with the inland rev.

If you are subcontracting make sure that the company you are working for have added "contract works to their employers liability" and they issue you with "risk assessment" because if there are a lot of different business on site and something goes wrong you can prove what your job and area of work was, Also make sure that your public liability is correct.
N.B the above info is a bit OTT but the way people act if some thing goes wrong you have to cover your own backside.

You are correct. I say this as an ex-accountact who fancied a career change.

Also if you are subcontracting to a contractor in the CIS arena, you should have your own CIS card. Check with your local tax office for the current procedure. It used to be quite straight forward and could avoid problems if a site was ever "visited" by immigration or HMRC when you are on site.

Ok, but in terms of percentage, what's a decent % to be taking concidering they're doing the advertising and getting you the work?

There's a big difference in what is a decent percentage and what you can expect.

I've spoken to 2 or 3 firms in the last year and all they were offering was 35% !!

In addition they were charging low prices, it worked out that you would be working 8-10 hours a day to earn the same as you could with one job of your own.

In my opinion, you would be better off spending the time trying to build your own business, even if it's leafleting or cold-calling.
