Thinking of a new system
« on: February 28, 2010, 11:11:58 am »
I havent been on here for a while but have come back for some advice if thats ok. My wife and I are looking at purchasing a house out in the sticks with no drive or means of setting up my static ro system.
The way I see it Ive two options, either rent a small unit which could double as a store for all my other equipment or fit a van mounted system as I could get a water supply to the front lawn.
If I swap to a van system is it just a case of filling up the tank with tap water and off i go? What about waste? Im quite savvy with my static system but have never looked into other options so my apologies for asking what must seem to some of you common knowledge.

if you can do a di only then it will be fine, if you need a ro, i would rent a unit,  other wise i think it might be a pain

So living in a hard water area I'm guessing I need to keep my RO system. Are you saying that with just a DI I could fill my tank with normal water but with an on board RO system things are different? Thanks for the help

if you live in soft water area, with a low tds then a di will do,  u live in a high water area, so are going to need a ro system,  u will either have to leave it connected up to ur van at night to make the water, or get a unit and make it in the day and transfer when needed

Phil, I can see a few options for you.

Fill your tank up with tap water and run it through DI on demand. This will be costly in a hard water area though. If you double DI'ed it would reduce.

Next is run your RO overnight to fill your tank. That's so long as you can park near a water supply. You may need a booster pump to fill it depending on the pressure.

Thanks chaps. Looks like I'm going to have to stick to the RO. If  I can get a water supply out the front with a waste return then maybe I can avoid the cost of a unit. Were desperate to live in the middle of nowhere and this is probably one of many hurdles to overcome :)

As for the waste you would just need an out pipe and run it down a drain or to a patch of grass ;)

Am i missing something here? Is there no way you can put a small shed up at this new house?
If not a friend of mine set up his RO system in his kitchen and it works very well for him. It has a cupboard of its own, and he has the waste going straight into his kitchen waste pipe and the pure through a hose out of the wall, runs down his garden around 15 metres or so to his van. He has to pop out every so often to see how much the tank has filled up, but it works well for him.
By the way, he has a pressure booster pump on the system.

A shed is an option. Its a mid terrace with a long front garden so the shed would be 20ft from the house and the kitchen and bathroom are at the rear. This would mean Ive got at least 40ft to consider. Then theres the path going by the front gate, then a grass area owned by the council and then the cresent where we can park! I hope you can now see how this could be a hassle. Plus points are huge rooms, a swimming pool and rural views to the front and rear ;D

Well if you have an onboard system, you have still got to get a hose to the van to fill. The hose will be over a public pathway for a good few hours.
I would personally buy a shed, fill the static tank with pure, and pump the pure to the van if you can, even its 100ft from the shed to the van, thats only 30 metres.

I use to have all my filters, ro etc in the van and it was a complete pain in the ass, i now got it all in a shed and its so much easier, if I only need 300 ltrs then thats all i transfer to the van, the amount of times my tank was full to the top but not needed was untrue, even if you had a 600 ltr static tank this really wont take up much room.
