1 more mile and the van would have been written off
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:24:26 pm »
That's what the mechanic told me this morning !

Set out this morning and there was a awful clunk noise coming from the back of the van. Being no mechanic I turned around and rang my local garage to see if they would take a look at it.

To cut a long story short.... The guy who fitted my tyre a month or so ago didn't tighten the rear nearside wheel nuts enough and they started to work themselves loose. Turns out the noise was actually the wheel coming loose.

Mechanic said another mile and it would have come off.. Had it, it would have been a write off because of the value of replacing a rear axle and other bits.

Check your wheel nuts lads

Must be a common failing.  Happened to one of my lads last year - same thing, had a new tyre fitted and the next day his wheel fell off - lack of tightening on the wheel nuts.

A few years ago I was driving on the A21 when a wheel overtook me.  A few seconds later a van overtook me on three wheels with huge showers of sparks coming from the nearside end of his rear axle where it was grinding along the road a 50mph :o

When it eventually stopped I pulled in behind and asked the driver if he was OK - he was so shocked all he could say was "F*** me!!  f***me!!" over and over again.

Didnt you get back for the week after check, When ever I get new tyres they tell me I need to return the following week or just after 50 miles to check there tight enough.

I had a wheel come off a car once, pulled away from traffic lights giving the car a bit of wellie turned right and bonk my rear wheel flying past me!!! and it was quite a wide big wheel! Luckily it just went into the hedge !!!
Unluckily the copper who nicked me for speeding the week before just happened to pull up he found it most amusing and even helped me find the wheel nuts.
No real damage to car. But had no idea why they came loose?

only the nearsides wheelnuts can work loose due to the direction of the wheelspin.  some Transits have opposite threads on the nearside wheels only so it can never work loose .

they put them on with air guns in garages so always check them with a bar and socket.
life is like a box of chocolates you get the crap no one else wants
