Looking for advise on which filtration setup to get
« on: February 17, 2010, 12:14:43 pm »

The whole wfp system is all new to me so learning as I go along...

What i am confused with is with filration system to go for...I no my water hardness will determine which but i think my water is pretty soft...I am looking at the merlin at the min and am trying to work out how it works, does it produce waste water or is it all pureified?  Do you run your tap water straight to it and then from it through a vessal then presto pure water?

When you produce the pure water from the vessal do you run a hose straight into the tank in the van or store it or what?

Any help here would be great cheers!

if you are going to go for a van set up arthur can do this for you, all you have to do it choose what you want for the size of van you are getting, i have the 4040 RO in mine so cant comment on the differences between that and a merlin.  I do know one thing though with my 4040 RO i still havent needed to change the resin in my DI vessel since september and its now february, im still geting a tds reading of 000 and tbh my RO is giving me 001 when its finished, so my resin is doing very very little work.

Im going to be using a Seat Inca van so was thinking a 250l tank should be good to use...i havent really looked at the 4040 RO yet would it be required in fairly hard water areas or does it keep the cost of producing pure watewr to a min?

as far as im aware you have to replace the filters in a merlin more often i think, just like the prefilters, i would say for your seat inca a 350 litre would be grand, i have a 99 caddy van and i have 350 ltr in mine, front to back, bulkhead removed from it.

IMO
The simplest start up for a van system is a di only. For this you need a low tds reading on your water.

Required
1. tank 250ltr as you have said.
2. Pump
3. on off switch or flo control
4. conection to van battery
5. resin vessle

About €500 worth of gear there, arthur or some of the guys mentioned on the other thread will fit them for you €500 tops.

Then set up a rain water barrel at home to reduce your use of resin.

Buy a pole and away you go

Im liking the sound of that set up to start of with...

What size of resin vessal would you be best to go for when di only?

When collecting rain water which way would you purify it? would you run it through your pump from barrel then through vessal in to tank? and finally for now lol what size of pole would you be best going for for domestic, would say 18ft be ok?

Cheers

If your TDS is less than about 20ppm, then DI is fine.  Use a 6lt cylinder - you get about 5 fills per bag of resin.  I would pump the water through the DI into the van tank - some put the DI between the tank and the delivery pump (the one that pumps the water to the brush) but that can reduce the flow at the brush.  Put some sort of filter before the pump that draws the rainwater - it will make the pump last a lot longer.

An 18ft pole will be long enough for most 2-story buildings, but you will need a longer one (25ft) for the odd high window - no point in turning down work because one window is out of reach.  Brodex are doing a 26ft fibreglass for £78 at the mo - fine for the odd few high bits.
