Make sure the switch is dry and mains lead isn't shorting near entrance to machine, and plug is dry. Failing that you have an interrnal short on vac, make sure wire to brushes arent touching armature. have you checked length of brushes as when they are short they can cause arcing on armature and a burning smell.
