Ive got an order for some commercial work, the purchase order came through in the post this morning but I've got to fill in a questionaire

and I'm struggling a bit, don't want to lose this job as it's a biggy.

I haven't done anything on this scale before and don't want to lose it through giving the wrong answers so if anyone with some experience

of this type of thing can assist with the questions below I'd be very grateful.

Questions:

1 - Please provide a copy of your safety policy statement

2 - How do you ensure you and your employees are provided with adequate health and safety training

3 - Please provide an example of a risk assesment and method statement used by your company

4 - Construction industry unique tax reference ( UTR number ) - I'm guessing this is for construction subbys only ???

If anyone wants to email me please send to - applepaul260z@yahoo.co.uk

Many thanks

Paul

Just incase you dont get a reply, try contacting your local business centre. They will either help you with the questions or refer you to someone you can. There are govenment orginisations who can help specificaly with business tenders  for SME's (well there is in wales).

Questions:

1 - Please provide a copy of your safety policy statement

Check out this link (H&S Policy is a legal/best practice requirement especially if you employ people)

http://www.hse.gov.uk/business/policy.htm

2 - How do you ensure you and your employees are provided with adequate health and safety training

Membership of trade bodies is a good example but training can be added to your policy

3 - Please provide an example of a risk assesment and method statement used by your company

There is a good example of a method statement in the document document section on here - cheack out the HSE website for risk assessments using the link attached

4 - Construction industry unique tax reference ( UTR number )

CIS - Contruction Industry Scheme only relates to subcontractor within the Construction Industry - see attached link

You could try them also, though some citys have a local business centre and its FREE. They also run courses for marketing and business plans but they are basic - handy though if you need help with a business plan.

Not sure of the tenders site for england sorry, if you google 'Business tenders england' there should be a site or 2. Have a scan at them 1st though as there are more than 1 and some require a sign up fee (the welsh one dosent ;D)

Hi Paul,

Question 1

Is asking for a copy of your firms Health & Safety Policy statement which is a document that details your attitude to Health & Safety and who is ultimately responsible for oversight of the policy. Every firm or self employed person should have this written down, as this is a legal requirement. The document is a page or two long.

This document is not the same as a written Health & Safety Policy, which again is a legal requiremnet for any company or individual who employs 5 or more people and can run into hundreds of pages.

Question 2

It is a legal requirement that the self employed or the employee's of any company recieve Health & Safety training  applicable to their job, this can range from a day long course in Health & Safety or many weeks, depending on the job. These courses are run by many firms all around the country, so should be easily found. However you must ensure that any course offered relates to the job that you or your staff undertake, and that they are officially recognised by the HSE. Perhaps you could send them details of your training records, and copies of the certificates obtained by your staff or yourself as the case maybe.

Question 3

A risk assessment is a document that details all the risks present when carrying out a specific job, this document should contain all stages of a job, and the inherent risks involved with each stage of the job, you also need to document actions that have been undertaken to minimise the identified risks. This document should be drawn up by a competent person as defined by the HSE.

A method statement should list the order in which you plan to undertake the work, from the very beginning, taking into account Health & Safety, best practice and the nature of the work being undertaken.

Steve's advice regarding your UTR is correct.

No offence to John, but his idea of using documents off the net in order to comply with the current legislation is a big no no, especially if you do indeed employ other people.

Regards,

Rob
