Hi im new to the forum and i want to change from traditional to WFP. There are going to be 2 of us working from one van, so i think that an 800 ltr tank would be best, and i will need to have the filter system in the van. Could anyone give me there advice on RO systems. I have read so many posts that im just getting more confused.

I live in a hard water area (essex), but i have good water pressure. I will need to fill the tank up in the evenings after work. I am on aa budget, so i cant really afford a 4040 unit, but also i dont like the idea of having a lot of waste water like i have read that you get from the Merlin unit (but if that is the best one to get i can live with it.

So should i get the merlin system, a 400gpd system, or is there somthing better for a similar price that can produce the amount of water that i need.

i have a 2 man set up with a 650 l tank in the van , i fill up from a static system and use the pure freedom 450gpd ro and with good water pressure it will fill a 1000l ibc tank in 24 hours regards alan

You say that you have a 650ltr tank for 2, does that last all day, and what sort of work do you do with it?

To tell you the truth, i dont know, i should buy a TDS meter.

4040 RO is what you need really and will only cost you a few hundred more than the smaller RO units.

All you need is 20” pre filter, carbon filter and 4040 RO (or even the 20” inch RO) plus hose and clips etc from Gaps water. Attach it all to a small trolley or steel frame take it to and from the van when you need to, you may be able to fill up in 6 hours or less if you have good water pressure.

I have low water pressure where my 1000 litre IBC tank is and I can still fill that in less than 11 hours, even with the slower RO filter & low water pressure.

Thanks for the reply, but money is really tight. so if i can get away without getting a 4040, it would be better, if im right, 1000 litres is 200 gallons, so if i got a 400gpd ro unit, and connected it up at 5.00 in the evening, and left it till the next morning, then that would be 16 hours, so that should produce enough water to fill my 1000L tank? Does that sound right? Do the 400gpd units produce less waste water than the merlin units?

get a tds and find out what ur tap water is,   r u on a water meter?

No, i have water rates, i am in a hard water area, so i would assume that the tds would be quite high, but i will have to get a TDS meter.l

although money may be tight you need to consider when that in the winter your water production will be less than in the summer when temps are far higher so the better ro or merlin you buy now will save you further costs in the long term

i have a 200 GPD system and it take nearly 24 hour to make 300L a day.
Remember these systems are quoted in US Gallons, so the output is less than uk gallons.

I would personally spend a little more in getting a decent RO unit, like a 4040, it will be cheaper in the long run than a cheap system that you have to change in a few years.

Ive been looking on the net an found a website called cleaningspot and there prices dont seem to bad for:-
40" hf5 4040 ro membrane
40" mambrane housing
2 x 20" filter housings
1 x 20" sediment filter
1 x 20" carbon filter
pair of brackets

Total £457 inc vat

does this sound a good price, are there any other filters that i need to run with it, would i need a Di resin tank with this as well?

That’s all the filters you need, that price is good, get a list from them itemising everything you will get and ask them if you need anything else.

Have a look on (www.)  Gapswater (.co.uk) have a reverse osmosis section for window cleaners, they have a few 4040 RO’s, give them a call and ask the same question.

You will need a DI vessel & the resin.

Once you have your own complete list you start to get an idea of prices, you can make your choices.

The gpd figures are optimum performance figures which is never close to being achieved in real life.  It always depends on local conditions.  Also, the gpd tends to quote american gallons which are a bit smallere than ours - more like 4 litres per gallon rather than the nearly 5.
My merlin has a rating of 720 gpd IO think.  In reality it's closer to 720 litres than gallons.  That's due to water pressure issues.  I've never bothered with a pump as it produces enough for what I need.
