Waste carriers licence
« on: January 20, 2010, 05:49:51 pm »
Who's got one? How do you apply? What does it involve? Where does it allow you to dispose of gutter type sludge and pigeon poo?

I've picked up a gutter cleaning job from a large management company. I know I can't remove waste from site. This company have given me the go ahead without many questions. I know they have other properties and have jumped at the idea of using a vac - they paid a lot of money for a cherry picker last time. It's a very good earner for me. Where can you dump the waste? Can it be dumped at the local recycle centre or what?
Remember this is commercial work and under the gaze of the general public (bound to be some do gooders about).

if you dont take a lot of waste away, i would get a skip and then you dont need a licence,  if you take it away, u then need a licence and have to pay to dump it then, u cant take it the public skip,  i use to get charged £45 a ton, to dump waste,  even if i only had half a ton it was £45

in the end, i let the licence expire and just got small skips, worked out cheaper for what i needed, (plumber)

you dont need one.
i do wheelie bin cleaning and when i was speaking to enviromental agencys i questioned the waste carriers licence.

the sludge muck is the same category as my waste water.
you are the producer of the waste

Carriers

Unless you qualify for an exemption, if you want to transport controlled waste in England and Wales as part of your business or with a view to profit, you need to register as a waste carrier. However, you don't need to do this if:

    * you are carrying waste that you have produced, unless it is building or demolition waste;
    * you are moving waste between different places within the same premises; you are transporting waste from outside Great Britain to a place within it and the waste is not landed in Great Britain until it arrives at that place;
    * the waste is being transported by sea or air from a place in Great Britain to a place outside Great Britain.

hope this helps

Unless your gutters have plastic or metal bits in them, the contents can be classed as garden waste which can be taken to a council waste recycling site for disposal FREE of charge.

Seems to be a grey area so far  :o

Domestic work I just pour off the water down the nearest drain then dump the sludge on a compost heap or hide it in the borders. The job I have lined up is surrounded by carparks but with a river nearby. It would be tempting to dump it on the river bank or in the river but I doubt an environment officer would agree. I'll have to search for the office bins - they must have some somewhere.
I have returned home in the past with a couple of sackfuls of the gunk - grew some brilliant geraniums in it  ;D

If you pollute the river, just send all your money including savings and keys to your house and anything else that would be worth any money, to the Environment agency. It will be cheaper than the fine ;)
