Van V's Box Trailer
« on: January 19, 2010, 08:06:06 pm »
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone uses or is using a box trailer rather than a van for CC equipment.
I have been weighing up pro's and cons of using a trailer

Pros

Cheaper to buy
No need for two vehicles
Can be locked in garage at home

Cons

Theft....:(
Manouverability

Would love to hear of peoples experiences

Many Thanks

Steve

Very often, twin wheel easy to reverse, four wheel nine out of ten you may need to unhook, oh check your licence you may be unable. ;)

It's how I started. It was quite handy really as I could drop the trailer if the street etc was a bit tight. Mine was Blueline (norfolk company) and very secure with twin doors and very good locks with a Bradley ball hitch lock, basically it could be locked to the tow vehicle or locked so it could not be towed away. The times you will need to leave it will be few so provide it's secure it will be fine, you could always get a clamp for it too. My only concern was some smart alec picking it up with a hiab! Towing is ok, just keep the speed down, reversing one is an art but practise and it's fine. Check the brake weight of you tow vehicle and i'd recommend a braked twin wheel trailer if you have the budget. New around £2500 ish for a good bit of kit, half that for decent used or you may be lucky with local papers etc and find a bargain. You could buy a chassis and build it yourself if you are minded that way. Parking in town car parks is a pain in the bum though as you'll need two spaces. I only changed to a van when I needed a larger one and it was getting to near £3000.00 to buy a van was the better option. I remember a certain Mt Bolton having one towed with a Range Rover I think, not sure if that's still the case, it was in 1993 ;D

Good luck

I started out with a 1m2 box trailer which I had bespoke made by a local trailer builder, it was big enough to get everything in.  I used it for over a year on the back of a Peugeot 405, it's still sat in the unit if anyone is interested in it, hasn't moved for probably 3 years but is in A1 condition, carpeted inside and cargo rails on side for bungeeing everything up.

I'd recommend going for a trailer if money is a bit tight, set up is probably less than the cost of the insurance on a van.

I think Derek Walker has his TM in one, ask Pete Sweeney he knows him well.

I used to have a Maxx D in a twin wheel trailer. Which was towed by a MWB Transit. I got pulled to a weighbridge and was found to be 1/2 ton over it legal towing weight.  The 1/2 ton was the 500 litres of water!
