How annoying is the L5 cutout at 17 minutes for you?
« on: January 18, 2010, 08:41:43 pm »
I've been using a modified L5 heater for over a year now. When I started using it I was stopping & starting the water flow a lot as I pulled hoses etc. and this reset the timer for me, so the cutout didn't bother me so much.

Now I'm learning to work faster and rarely getting hoses snagged anymore and I'm finding my water going cold at least once a day,... so I've been looking into a way to fix it. Its impossible to safely modify the existing L5 ignition unit, but there is a version of the same ignition unit that doesn't have a 17 minute timer. I'm finding out prices at the moment, so watch this space,....  ;D ;D

I'm circulating the water in a 125 liter tank & teeing off on the return for the pole. So if it switches off I still get warm. Not ideal but ok for mo. Would be interested in your  ignitioon module.

When you're working you have 17 minutes continuous hot water. once the 17 minutes is up the heater switches off (Its a safety feature designed to stop ppl suffocating when they use it indoors!). Simply stopping the flow and re-starting it re-sets the heater and you start a brand new 17 minutes.

I've tried 3 different types and haven't been impressed. They just don't have the range & reliability I want. :(

Just wondering about your working practice, do you plug in and go and not stop the flow between windows or houses.  It's rare for me to pump for 17 minutes nonstop even on commercial as I switch off between windows.  I have the odd job where it would be a problem as there are such long runs of windows but those jobs are few and far between.

just emailed the people who sale the units because people have said about the 20 min cut of this is what i got back Dear carlf2007,

Hi, thanks for the inquiry and the order. Your friend is partially correct. There is an automatic 20 minute safety shutoff timer on the unit. This is reset as soon as you turn the unit off and back on or water stops and starts flowing again. The is no way to bypass it. If it becomes an issue, I do have some battery box/control pads with the timer turned off that we could work something out on. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks for looking!

hope this helps people regards carl

So Nat wouldnt standing on your pole-pipe or crimping it into a 180° bend stop the flow and re-set the L5 ? Thus sorting out the issue?

27 dollers the bypass thing is this is what i got.......... it's a fairly simply replacement - a couple of screws and quick connect snaps. The shipping is actually more than the item itself (shipping is around USD$20.00 - the item I could probably get to you for $7.00). It controls the ignition pin, heat sensor and timer. You will need to take care if you were to obtain and install one as it acts as a secondary override for the heat sensor. If the heat sensor would fail to shut the unit down, the inside of the heater would probably melt the wires. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!

Nath, sorry mate, I am actually confused with this L5 from what Ive read.

What EXACTLY happens with this 17 minute business, the heater stops heating the water when what happens exactly?

After 17 minutes of continuous non-stop water flowing & heating the L5 will cut out. If you stop & start the water flow as you work you won't have a problem as the heater resets every time the water stops flowing.
Once the heater cuts out after 17 minutes, all you need do is stop the flow and re-start it to get the heater running again,.. so its not a big deal, just a minor annoyance.
I'm finding I'm stopping the flow less and less, especially on commercial work & it does get on my nerves occasionally.

im still waiting for mine but from what i have read  it cuts in when it been running for that time and you will still get cold but if you turn off and start again you will get a fresh 17 /  20 mins but the add on that you can get for around $25 is to stop this for happening but in my eyes is doggy to use and can end up burning the wires in the unit if some think goes wrong no one on here who uses them are not putting   ex.. o yes they are really good i have been useing theses for age best thing i bought i just think we need to speak to the dealers and get it right spoke to my insurance company and they said its fine to carry the 15kg gas bottle....
