Just received an e-mail from the lady resposible for contracts in a property management company. This company only deals with commercial property and she wants me to supply a quote for the window cleaning on a large office block in th city centre of Plymouth.
Now, this lady also happens to be the girlfriend/partner of the guy who owns my local fishing tackle shop and we often chat over a pint of maggots. She found out what I did for a living and said that she's been given the job of sorting out the contracts side of the company as the same cleaning firm had been doing the cleaning for just about ever and had earned a fortune. The contracts had never been put out to tender just left with this same company without question. Her job is to shake it up a bit and, though I've yet to be given this particular contract, it just goes to show that it really is who you know and not what you know a lot of the time.
Another good example of this is a night club we look after. The owner at the time was a good friend of the wife's. We started off cleaning the windows each week and now clean the place daily for a very decent wekly fee; even though the wife's friend left a long time ago.
There must be loads of us who have picked up work simply because we've known the " right people "; and long may it continue
