Is there any point ?
« on: January 09, 2010, 07:30:33 pm »
Question for you...

I have a 13yr old van that isn't insulated, you can hear the wind blowing whilst you drive from seals in the door that don't work any more.

I have a 400L upright tank, not insulated in any way.

Now in the tank is 2 x 300w aquarium heaters that have been dropped in 2 holes in the top of the tank (not sealed up).

Is there any point keeping the heaters going from now until work on monday morning ? The water isn't freezing cold, but not warm (was on for 18hours last night) when I checked it today.

In the next 36 hours the heaters will have to be unplugged 3 times min. 1st time for 4 hours, then for another 45 mins, then for another 45mins.

So if you read all that, is there any point plugging the heaters in now or should I leave it till the night before ?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address please
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

chuck a old quilt over the top of it, it'll keep the heat in the tank

the running cost of the heaters are very small, if it stops the water from freezing it'll be worth it

though saying that the forecast for next week is still 0 C, so this ice on the paths/ roads is likely to stay around, not working conditions

Ive been trying to make sure my system continues to stay defrosted. Any tanks I have are no problem now with my tank heaters, its just the pipe-work in the van I need to be aware of, this is sorted with a small van heater left in the van on 'frost' setting.

I also ensure so as to stop any additional problems once we get going again that my outside pipes that feed my RO are defrosted daily, otherwise the frost'll split them if left for too many days then I wont be able to make any water.
