Anyone got a sideline?
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:18:53 pm »
Has anyone got a sideline to cover emergencies like bad weather or temporary incapacity or illness?

I'd been wondering about refurbishing old vacuum cleaners in the evenings or something similar. I enjoy messing about with stuff like that and it might make enough to buy the odd pack of sausages etc.

I'd also thought about setting up an eBay shop selling classical CDs. You can pick them up for a song (!!!) at car boot sales and charity shops. I'd enjoy collecting them. (I'd sell off all the Beethoven and Shostakovich and probably keep all the Mozart and Bach.)

What do you think?

Any suggestions for what might be a good idea?

Ebay have got abit expensive over the last couple of years. We used to sell alot of stuff on there as PDF files till they banned that. In your case though, I'd look into Ebay, we made quite a few quid on it. There are quite a few things to learn on there about keeping your listing costs to a minimum, but if you have alot of stuff to sell, then go for it.

Another thing is, alot of people buy on Ebay, and sell on markets. Good luck mate.

You can try it, untill someone bubbles you. The only problem is, if you keep doing it after you have been warned not to by Ebay, you get banned. I was / am still a member of VERO. Copyrite section, means you can really target the cometition by claiming they are selling your items. Bit complicated, and a pain in the butt.

CD's will work for awhile, till the other sellers of similar items decide to wee on your cornflakes, if you know what I mean.

aargh didnt realise what VERO was,i used to do quite a bit of dropshipping on ebay, trainers, womens handbags etc and was always getting them pulled buy ebay for trademark infringements???;(( now i realise what others were doin, either reporting the items as they were the same as theres or because i was doing them cheaper, sly but wise i suppose, thanks for the insight...also how did you become a member of VERO??? thanks again steve

It's fairly easy to become a member of Vero. You have to be a seller with a "Me page", think it's called something else now, have your profile filled out fully etc. All you need to do is, find someone selling either the same PDF or CD and e-mail Vero. You will have to confirm your details by fax, then you will see them remove the item from sale. Now you are registered as a member or copyrite owner. Now you blow the rest of the oposition out of the water.

One of the item we sold was a guide to setting up a proofreading business. Anything that was similar we would vero it.

If you click on vero's page in Ebay, you will see how it works and how to get in. Some parts may have changed lately, don't know.

I run a taxi as my bad weather insurance....thank goodness I have had to fall back over these last few weeks.  I dont know how some of you guys can survive in this weather, my last 'proper' window cleaning day was 18th December   ???

It is better to own your own car, some investment in licences and insurance, CRB, medical etc but easily covers costs within a few weeks.

Cleaning what? Domestics? Shops? Offices?

Seems like a good idea. Room for a few referrals.

(I used to get lots of enquiries when I was doing Tesco's store front windows ... both from other businesses in the area and from domestics. Problem is, the stores I worked in were miles from home.)

We've got a few sidelines, main ones are on the websites below, ie: bike hire and holiday cottages.

We're in the process of setting up a private hire business which has come about due to needing to be insured and licenced for transporting people and bikes across to whitehaven to do the C2C cycle route, so I thought might as well make use of the vehicle and get it working at weekends!
