When is it safe to work ?
« on: January 08, 2010, 07:49:10 am »
Hi Guys,

When do we think it'll be safe to work again (Trad) ?

I've had one day since the 17th Dec. Choose not to work between Christmas & New Year (which was typically fine). I'm willing, and have purchased some dishwasher salt to grit afterwards.

Reading the forum, I'm under the impression it's best to wait at the moment, but I know an aerial installer who worked yesterday and gonna work today !!

I'm going out to do three houses this morning (if I can) then I'm going to take my youngest son tobogganing.

I've had three 5 galls containers of water in the hall warming up next to the radiator all night and I'm using the trolly. I've given up using the van mounted system because the hose freezes on the ground.

personally  dont bleve that ladders with decent spikes can slip .  iv set my spikes about 1 inch lower than normal .  a good gripping shoe  is also essential . i  swear by  Mercury trainers , good grip on ice and on icy rungs as the sole is made of a sort of marshmallow type of rubber  . GET THE RIGHT GEAR  before you go and theres no problem  on icy ground

a good test of a shoe/boot is to go in a shoe shop and hold the shoe onto a shiny surface such as the top of a cabinet and try n slide it . this was how i found the Mercury and a bonus is theyre cheap as chips (£10)  . mercury are a cheap range ,i have about 5 pairs of the "capone" but i think all mercs have the same rubber in the soles  .

i understand , but will you wait until theres not a bit of ice  , you might slip on  a  1 cm  square of ice  and that could be weeks away.  my only worry was that some old birds might try n turn me away, but thats not been the case

yes,i worked friday and around here its as deep snow as anywhere . i parked my old crate on edge of town and just walked with ladder ,i didnt do half as many as normal but  i was getting "cabin fever" stuck at home . im pretty sure cabin fever is a bad thing to get , maybe not as bad as a ladder slip, but risky nontheless
(also a lot of it is a state of mind .

My only piece of advise, for what its worth, for someone who has such poor regard for their own personal safety is make sure you have your mobile phone with you wherever you go.

I wish you luck I also hope you dont need it.

I heard of a trad WC falling off before Christmas. A young lad in a team of 3 and  broke his shoulder. 2 ambulances arrived and the the medics were not very pleased with the WC`s, especially the boss.
I heard they were quoting H&S,asking why they were working in the snow and telling them to call it a day.
So, don`t expect too much sympathy if you come a cropper.
