Ideally Id like a website for each targeted area eventually, but I do think they bring in business after all they are above the website listings and so are the first thing most people see.

Am I doing something wrong ?

I seem to think when I started trading both the listings I put on there went to page one and are still there now, (Chesterfield and Mansfield) but trying to add new areas now and I can't even find them amongst the 20 odd pages. Listed them about 4 weeks ago now.

Is there a knack to getting to page one ?

Cheers

In my experience, time is the only factor.  I threw a crappy one-page site up 5 years ago and it isn't SEO'd at all... it's first on google maps and the first "proper" carpet cleaning site on google if you ignore the ppc and free directory sites.

Must get round to doing it properly, although sod's law says when I do a "proper" site it'll crash to page 100 ::)

Paul, use this tool http://www.submitexpress.com/analyzer/ and you will notice how you need to include more keywords within the site text. For starters you don't include the names of towns enough times within the site.
That would help move you up the rankings.

Google is trying to beat us at the moment and what ever we thought about it has gone through the window, I think it's down to age, I was watching a webinar the other day and it said links to other sites aren't as powerful as they once were.

My SEO man said that everyone has now gone for websites and is finding it harder and harder to get page 1 let alone No 1, I'd guess it's the same for the maps.

Maybe the likes of Yellow Pages will make a revival.

Steady Joe.

What will happen is that if you can't get on google page 1 rankings then pay per click will grow as will yell and face book online advertising.

one was apart from ad words etc is to put a advert on gumtree.com and go on about your company in the listing and put your website on it to then gumtree gets you top ranking on the front page it works well and its free

I tried the Yell SMS pay per click offer - very poor.
The whole thing became a nightmare -they listed me as a Domestic Cleaner - with Sub text and copy in wonderful support!
Eventually unravelled this - but very poor listings.
I do not think Yell know what they are doing with this - and thet admitted to "teething" probs!!

My advice on this one - steer clear!!!

Anyone else tried this - its called Yell SMS....?

google Maps and Freeindex  = much much better and FREEE!!!!

Hi

Has same problems with Yell SMS sevice was described to us by yell sales rep when she visited us and we we decided to give it a go. As soon as it went live we realised the service she had described to us was not what Yells SMS were going to deliver. To cut a long story short we tried to cancel service but were told we had to pay full contract cost Sales rep refused to answer our phone calls trading standards involved eventually after alot of hassle managed to obtain full refund of payments made to Yell.

As had been said this service one to avoid at moment the various parts of Yell don't seem to understand how the product is suposed to work and nobody is prepared to sit down and talk to the customer about these problems.

Kind Regards

Eddie

I think the Google Local Business Centre listings are determined purely by the address you enter when you register.  If you're in Liverpool for instance then you'll appear in the local listings for Liverpool.  Obviously the bigger the area the more difficult it will be to appear prominently in the listings.  Google usually have a 'ten box' but can sometimes just have a 'one box', which means they either display ten results or just one result respectively.  Google don't make it easy do they!
