Help with pure water
« on: December 28, 2009, 02:49:40 pm »
Hi all

I have just moved from trad to WFP, and need some help.

I recently got a eco trolley from brodex with a 7 & 25ft alloy pole. :)

I have two 1000 L IBC tanks which i want to use for filling with pure water, one tank will hold harvested water and the other for pure water through a RO system. my TDS is About 103

I need some help with the following questions:

1. What type of pump should i buy to transfer NONE PURE WATER through the RO system to the pure water tank. i have been told to get a booster pump from the likes of machine mart or cleaning spot http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cbm100ss-1in-stainless-steel-booster-pum/path/booster-centrifugal-pumps
2. Which RO system should i get? i have been looking at a merlin system and also a standard 300gpd system ?
3. This may seem like a daft question, but, can i connect the waste pipe from the RO system back into the IBC tank so that the water will not go just down the drain, i am on a water meter.

Any help on any of these question
Many thanks

I do have a little 200 GPD RO system which is fitted to a 250l tank, for the time been, as the trolley only holds 50L and i have a few jerry cans, it was only £129 from pure freedom.

The only thing that i find is that the water rate is quite slow.

Yeah, it FREE :) water, from the clouds above.

I am just after the answer for my 3 questions above.

The main answers im looking for are, If i can put the drain water from the RO system back into the harvested water tank, which should then give me no lost of water, also which type of pump is best for transfering the water from one IBC through the RO to the other IBC.

If you're using rainwater, you really shouldn't need an R.O. system at all. My rainwater comes in at between 004 and 008.

If the TDS reading of your harvested rainwater is really 100+, you might need to look at cleaning the surfaces you collect from, cleaning the drain pipes and thoroughly washing out the IBCs. I reckon that your TDS should be less 010 ppm when everything is clean.

If you really insist on getting your harvested rainwater to 000 ppm, the most you'll need is a DI system.

I can use my rainwater raw without any problems.

The 'drain water' from your RO contains all the impurities removed from the pure water, so has a much higher TDS than the input water.  Putting it into your 'harvested water' tank will defeat the object of harvesting in the first place.

Secondly you can't run an RO without producing waste - the waste flushes all the crud away, as stated above, so even if you put it through your RO again you will still need to allow waste to wash the membrane and if the input TDS is higher than your tap water, again you defeat the object as you will need more waste to compensate.

Keep the two  systems separate, and as Wally says you should be able to use the rainwater raw.
