WFP effect on wood frames?
« on: December 14, 2009, 04:50:03 pm »
Has anybody had concerns raised about possible effect of purified water on wooden frames, especially the brown lacquered frames?
I'm not saying it does effect them, however a customer asked me this as they had to have their brown painted/lacquered frames re-painted prematurely.
I appreciate your reply's.
Thank you.

If you rub paint or lacquer with a brush and water once a month it is bound to have some effect. As is wiping with a damp cloth or squeegeeing in to the frame and wiping round with a scrim and as is leaving the frames to absorb dirt and wiping them off once a year.

When I was trad. I would often pick up flakes of paint on my applicator or squeegee.

In my opinion having wooden windows means that they will need painting, staining or lacquering from time to time. The method of cleaning or neglecting them to airborne pollution will have little difference to the time scales between painting.

Occasionally a custy will get a bee in their bonnet about this and it is usually those who neglect their windows and want to have a moan. Don't accept any blame unless you scrub like a scrubby thing from scrubbyland in wormwood scrubs!

Oh and welcome to the looney bin that is cleanitup unless you are a reincarnation of someone who has left in which case welcome back! ;D

Yes,it does effect the paintwork,I lost a job in the summer due to this, their varnished window sills were left dull after a about 3 cleans, she wanted them done trad instead but I refused as all the people in the cul de sac would want them done trad if they seen me doing one house off a ladder,it was the only house with wooden sills as the rest were UPVC and I was'nt prepared to do the whole lot trad ;D

WFP accelerates untreated/unpainted rotten wooden sills.

And rain doesn't?

How many times does it rain in 6 or 8 weeks? And for how long?

I expect it contributes to it as well. Customers should paint/treat wooden sills are lot more frequently than many do instead of just blaming their window cleaner's for their rotten sills.

I clean many wooden frame windows and in my experience wfp does accelerate the wear. The water also leaves painted wooden frames dull looking.

Does your cosy wipe up the rain after every rainfall? No IF the wood is sealed properly it will come to no harm. The sealer must be applied to  top and bottom, as wood in Hygroscopic like a moisture magnetic this problem is a painter`s problem. Varnish or liqueur is a half job.

WFP water removes and tarnishes the outer finish of cheap brass on doors.

Try and not hit it with the brush stock.  :D

I thought I would revive this one.  Just taken on 2 jobs with wooden frames and what a nightmare.  Windows were very dirty, paint flaking and it took longer than I'd predicted.  It ruined my day, what do I do?? :(

If the frames are that bad i refuse the job.... Tell them the windows need repairing / repainting.

Otherwise just stick to the glass
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go
