i`d never retire as in close down my business but will stop the manual work one day. my business will have to continue as i think its a better investment than pensions. i would like to think my son would carry it on if he was happy to do so.

11 days time and counting ;D

At least that's when I'll be eligible to collect my State Pension.  It won't make a huge difference to my lifestyle, I currently do about 6-8 hours cleaning a week and then whatever is necessary to keep things ticking over

Ah, gotcha! I thought you meant you'd retire at 70 and have 40 years left before you died!  :-[

As for me I think that (Ecclesiastes 9 v 11 notwithstanding) then I think I'll drop to 3 days of 9am til 2pm at 60, 2 days at 65 and keep going at that rate on a "get out from the wife's feet" basis until I drop. Perhaps stop completely at 70 'ish and sell the cream I will have kept.
It's a game of three halves!

I plan on retiring in the next three years. I will be 45 and I am looking forward to building my business and a structure of key personnel to make this happen!!!

This is one subject that really irritates me.My local paper used to run profiles on interesting people when they had space to fill on a saturday. You could even nomintate someone, but a lot of times it was business types that had done quite well, or a visiting panto star. The questions were always the same and i suppose were supplied written so they had plenty of time to think of witty replies. In any event all the business ones started with saying how they loved business, had allways wanted to do it, and were passionate about whatever business it was that they were doing. That part was okay, the bit i didn't like was when they were asked about their ambition it was to be retired by the time they were forty and sat on a beach somewhere. ???

Where's the fun in that?

Well that would be down to personal interpretation of retirement. My idea of retirement may be somewhat different to someone elses!!

I want, in the next three years to be in the position of the business paying me an income that will support my lifestyle, with me offering a nominal amount of input.

My time will be spent developing further business opportunities, one of which will be starting in January and came completely out of the blue, I wasn't expecting it but I see it as a very important step. it has nothing to do with the business of cleaning and for the first time in 12 years i am going to have to rely on someone else to bring me an end product. My input into the equation will be to sell the finished article.

Retirement for me will definately not involve working myself into the ground but i will work on various projects as and when I want to, not when commitments force me to.

You have to wonder what state the country is going to be in by the time most of you retire. Also what you can do with your state pension by that time. They are talking about a benefits and pension time bomb because more and more of the population are living off the state one way or another and less and less people are paying in.

The old age pension is not enough to live on now so by then you won't be getting it until you are 90 and it will be enough to buy a bottle of milk. Those of you who still have plenty of time left should start thinking about it now and not just assuming it will be alright when the time comes because the chances are it won't.

Don't take out a private pension because they are a rip off and you get very little back for what you paid in. Joining a proper savings scheme where you have to pay in regularly and you can't just dip into your savings when you fancy a holiday is the best bet.

You would still need a few hundred thousand in your savings plan vince. I reckon to retire comfortably at 65 I would personally want a pot of £1,000,000.

This is not to fund an extravagent lifesyle but I figure on a 30 year retirement.

That sounds alot but when divided by 30 isnt so i see what your saying but you might not need so much a week if you own your home etc!

With low interest rates at the moment every thousand pounds you save will give you an income of about £30 a year. So you would need a hundred thousand to give you £3000 a year in interest.

Interest does little more than keep up with inflation. So if you take your interest as income year on year your income and pot of cash will decrease relative to inflation. So you either need a huge pot or some diversity in income your stream.

Either way if you rely on invested cash as a reitement plan you need several hundred k. Personally I want a million but have no idea if I will get there and will probably be working past 65, but don't anticipate working too hard by then.
